Took my buddies fishing the Sacramento River under the the Freeport Bridge yesterday for Shad. Anchored about 75 yards downstream of the bridge. We started with darts and spoons. The boat beside us was pulling in a fish about every 10 minutes. We caught a sock. Didn't even have a foot in it. Four lines in the water and not a single nibble for 3 hours. Tried different spoons, darts, plastic grubs, different weights. Nothing. Meanwhile the party continued beside us.
The other guys rigs were hard to see, but the tackle looked twice the size of what we were using, and they might have been using cut bait? Not sure. We were saved from the total skunk while trolling back to the marina, with my buddy bringing in this small striper. Still beat the best day of work and, watching those other guys having so much fun was entertaining in itself. I'll get those shad figured out some day. (included the picture of the sock, it put up quite the fight)
Sock it to em. The smile belies any dissapointments.
Good pictures , thanks for an amusing story ππ
Good pics. The sock could have been attached to a foot

I'm surprised that anyone was catching shad that far down on the Sacto. It's pretty late in the year, especially with the low water.
Iβll bet that sock smelled better than a skunk π

Did you keep fishing for the other sock
Shad play follow the leader , sometimes moving 5 or 6 feet either way is the difference between having a great day catching or a great day wishing you were catching . For Shad in the Columbia we used the Dick Nite lures --little spoons in orange or chartruse and sometimes adjusting up up and down a foot or two makes a difference too . But dont give up
Hey Buck Snort, thanks so much for the advise! I was getting ready to add Shad to my "Mythical Fish" list. We will definitely give your suggestions a try.
Sometimes you can be fishing 4 poles out the back of the boat and only one pole will catch them all . What does that tell ya ? You need to adjust the boat so your closer to the one pole catching the fish . The fish use slots in the river . If you can find the slot they are using then BINGO you will all catch fish . Good Luck .

I notice that bank fishing, many times one guy will be catching all the fish and guys right next to him nothing. Aways wonder why.
Yep that one guy is fishing in the slot where the fish are traveling . You can do the same with Salmon./Steelhead/even Sturgeon . Good Luck Catching !
