Went slow pitch fishing today caught this Rock Hind Grouper in 300 Ft water:-) 24lbs caught some Green jacks, Alamaco jacks and some smaller Nassau groupers we had to release.

Sounds like a good time. Haven't caught grouper in about 50 years, over in the Red Sea. We used to catch em about 100 pounds or so and I've seen em in shrimp nets at up around 500 pounds - excellent eating.
By the way, what is "slow pitch" fishing? Never heard of that one.

Can a fish thats been reeled up quickly from 300ft survive once released ?

Maybe, but only if it has a swim bladder (not all fish do) and it is vented properly.

The grouper have to be vented or released with a drop rig. If the sharks don’t eat them on the way down they can make it. We get some much larger and the slow pitch fishing is a Japanese fishing style. The largest fish I have caught is an 89lbs Goliath Grouper as I was brought is aka Jew Fish. We have spearfished them up to 600lbs. All illegal now:! I have fished 800 ft with the reel and rod and caught Tilefish.
Gordon we are bring our boat back from the Exhumas this is off of Highborn Cay great pocket. Fishing the Berry Island tomorrow.

Actually from what I understand to tile fish in Florida you have to have a special venting tool onboard if requested by FWC or they will fine you and confiscate your fish.

Brad we carry a few different ones just so the the FWC does not bother us along with short and long handle de-hooking tools.
They did a study on venting fish in the Gulf Coast and found that instead of sharks taking the weaker fish the dolphins were eating them.

This is the one we use the most when fishing deep waters. SeaQualizer
We set the depth of water we are fishing and it will release them at that set depth. We have had the sharks eat the whole damn thing and at 50 to 60$ each is almost as bad as the tackle we lose. So far three of them in one year!

Wow, I just moved up here from south Fla. My wife bought me a slow pitch set up a year ago.
First time out in 350' off Pompano Beach I slugged it out for over an hour on what I hoped was a fat grouper. Turned out to be a 200# bull shark!
Kept the rod when I moved to north Florida, but don't have any means to get out and use it.
Keep up the good work. This is a great way to catch, especially in the warm weather.

So you got to see your adversary or did you land it? I really like fishing that way lots of fun and like you said can work a fish up from deep water is always fun as you never know what you'll get. What part of North Florida are you at? What set up did you get? Rod, reel type?
