Remember the first time you took your child fishing ?

The very first time I took my 12 year's younger twin baby brothers fishing on the lake they were four years old then. I had to teach them everything, how to bait the hook, push the trigger on their Zebco 202 4 foot kiddie rod and work with each until they said, I got it!!! Kelly caught on after awhile and had the patients to wait for a nibble and anxious testing, is it a bite or just the minnow swimming his bobber? I'd tell him, if you leave that hook in the water long enough for a fish to take the bobber under, I'll buy you both a hamburger, malt and french fries as an award? It worked Kelly caught about a half pound Crappie! He was thrilled, brought the fish to me to remove it. Gotta be 16" &up in this lake, chucked it back into the water. Kerry being left-handed had trouble and grew frustrated, so I got him an opened face later on but he tried, fishing just never was his thang. Some take some don't. But Kelly as he and I spent year's together as big brother, younger brother he developed into a dern good fishing buddy, Kelly is a hulk of a scrapping 6'5" and huge wide muscle bound, karate fighting, wanting to fish his brain's out freak. No catfish, or Crappie bed's were safe and when we went working in the furniture shop, we were at the lake house getting after the fish! Now that we're both declining in health, as long as we're able I have a life long fishing buddy. I feel blessed God gave me two brothers to lean on now I'm getting older , I don't have to launch my boat alone.

The first time we took the boys fishing was when they were 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 at my then-Wife’s Boss’ house on a private lake. I took the boys down to the water, armed with their Snoopy rods and some nightcrawlers and a folding chair for each of them. I got Brady set up first (with his “lucky” Power Rangers bobber) and casted it out for him, set at about 2’. I cast just beyond the lily pads which extended about 25’ from the shore. The Red Ranger was named Jason(?), so I told him to let me know when Jason was gone.
I was getting Bryan’s rod ready when I heard Brady yell “Daddy, Daddy…Jason’s gone!” I looked up to see that he was right. I scooped up Bryan and stood next to Brady, telling him to set the hook. He did…and solid 18” LM exploded from the water. He dropped his rod tip as fast as his jaw and I told him to pick it up and keep pressure on. I never touched the rod, but only put my hand on his shoulder as he fought the fish. Well Mom, her Boss, her husband and their Son come running down to watch the excitement. I lip landed the fish and showed it off as the family had no idea that fish of that quality were in that pond. Unfortunately, we were unprepared at the time, so no pics of that one, nor the 11” bluegill he caught on the second cast, but we did get a nice pic of his 2nd LM (about 16 1/2”) I showed the pic to a buddy at work who put it in our company magazine under our annual fishing contest. The boys were immediately “hooked” on fishing that day!

I never had kids, so I blew my chance to have experiences like this. This is my Nephew's boy when he first tried fishing. When I saw the photo, I realized what I'd missed.

Barnacles....it's never too late. If you enjoy fishing still! Find a neighbor, a youth group or whatever....Take a kid fishing...it is usually more rewarding to you than the child!!

Great photo! As previously stated, look for an opportunity to be a mentor, seeing the excitement of someone catching their first fish is priceless! You haven’t blown anything, perhaps look for an organization which takes Vets fishing, too!
