Exactly how I taught myself how to fly cast. I'd go to the pond in the state park nearby and look for dimples in the water. If I could put a fly within 6 inches I knew I would catch a fish. Didn't matter that they were under 5 inches. Did get a big surprise on night though. A 5# largemouth took a #12 Adam's dry fly. That's still my PB bass

That is a nice surprise!
I know there are big LM in this pond as I have caught a few decent ones in the past, plus I talked to a guy as I was leaving and he caught and released a 20” and a 22” LM through the ice this past Winter.
It will take a while for me to get good enough to drop a fly within 6” of my target. Another 10 minutes (or years) of practice ought to do it 😜
Right now I am happy to get it to lay gently on the water without looking like it fell out of a boat😂

You're definitely on the right track. Best thing about fly casting is you absolutely must relax to do it well. If you tensed up, the best you can hope for is you don't catch your own ear.

I have to remember to stay smooth…the timing in front is good…once the loop is behind me all bets are off and just as in golf, if the timing is just a little off…bad things will happen 🤦🏼‍♂️
I may have to find a metronome just like in “A River runs through it”
I try to think 10 and 2, but I get too excited as I get ready to present
Haven’t caught myself….yet! 😉

I decided to grab a fly rod and a few lures on Saturday to go get some casting practice in at a local pond in front of the HS from which my boys graduated. The wind was calm, ahead of the pending rain showers, so off I went. The bluegills were feeding on the surface when I got there, so I just had to find a spot with room for my practice.
I tied on a #8 hook and put a panfish tube on the hook as I was sure my lack of ability would soon prove to be the end of that lure.
After missing a few light bites, my confidence grew despite missing those fish. A light rain started and the surface bite stopped. Stubborn as I was to land the first fish of the year, I took a lap around the pond looking for another spot to try once we got a break in the clouds. After assessing the amount of weed growth, I returned to the original spot as the rain stopped. I tied on a small fly and got an immediate bite on the first cast from a 10 1/2” bluegill. The fly was the ticket. Four more gills on the next 4 casts. I moved over a few yards and caught a crappie, then about a 9” rainbow. It was a great mental break for me after a tough week. I recommend that all try this.
Still lots of practice needed, though 😂

Good for you. I think I would return to that pond and practice some more

They get used to seeing little winged critters after a shower like that is ringing the dinner bell. Sometimes in the past we went down to a wide creek full of every kind of fish, fish wouldn't bite nothing, it came a hard rain everybody but us10 family members waited it out to ease off. Once it cleared catfish, crappies, sand bass, bluegill all turned on biting everything we threw across the creek. Glad you had you a good time!

That’s great OJ. I ought to get me a fly rod and go practice in our local pond. Those are some really nice fish OJ. I’d say your practice was well worth the trip. That feeling of catching a fish, just can’t get enough.

Good thing I didn’t have a pond near my high school or I would not have been in class. Nice gill!

What you've never played hooky?! There was a lake cove less than miles bike ride that I took a rod and small tackle box along after school fishing 🎣

I played hooky, but if a pond was in front of the school I would have never went through the doors. I skipped school for fishing and hunting and still managed to pass.

I would highly recommend it Hack! There are inexpensive combos available to see if you like it. It is pretty exciting and takes a bit of coordination. I can see why some just love it!

It will be different for sure. I caught my first LM on a fly rod when I was about 12. My Papa took me fishing every summer I went to Missouri to spend it with them. Also, he was the head engineer with the Frisco railroad line so I got to ride the train from Houston to Springfield. We planned a fishing trip for when I got home from Vietnam, but he passed away while I was there. Bummer. I think I’ll look into getting back in to fly fishing. That would be a blast from the past.

Nice start there OJ. Fine way to start your year. Now what happens when practice makes perfect? Closest thing I ever did to fly fishing was rigging up a fly rod with a small spinning reel. Trout fished that way when I was out West for a few years. Could send a 1/8oz spinner a long way with that rig.

Good question Lip! I am looking forward to exploring some of the trout streams Up North as well as some of the lakes I typically haunt. Unfortunately, the pond where I was practicing will soon be choked with weeds around the edges and those fish will be safe for a while.
