Today target carp and caught 6 plus my PB at 12.57 lbs. I think I have caught a bigger one but didn't have a scale so this one is my PB since I got my scale. Plus one was 11 lbs the rest 5 to 7. Over 50 lbs of fish. All C&R. Great fighters and lots of fun.

Hey Ranger, where were you fishing?

Please do not take this wrong. It is in no way a criticism or judgmental. I am really trying search out an answer. Bone fish and tarpon are both not eatable. Yet they are sought by some as the holy grail of fish. You said yourself that you thought you had a record trout. Clearly your statement shows carp fight hard. Carp will also take a fly in some cases but can be very finick. That puts them in a category with bone fish. Here is the question. Why are some non eatable fish trophies while others are considered trash. The same question could apply to Jack Carville and several other fish. I would love to hear responses from others as well, to this question. Please, no wise guy responses. This is a legit question looking for a legit answer. Note: I have caught all four fish mentioned. That makes me even more curious.

Its really only in this country that carp have a bad name. In Europe they are almost the number one game fish and eating fish. I guess it is where you are raise. People think the carp are going to eat every game fish in the lake and just wreck everything. Not true because carp have been in this country since the mid 1800's and are in every major lake and pond in the country and guess what, those same lakes and ponds have great fishing for crappie, bluegill, catfish, any fish you want to fish for, even the holy bass. I like fishing for them and catching them and turning them loose. Try it , you will like it.

Andy, It is true. But don't take that out of context. All fish eat fish eggs and fry if they can catch them. Predatory fish like bass, crappie, trout and other panfish also eat fingerlings. The more aggressive predatory fish like bass, pike and cats also eat other adult fish. Most are also cannibals'.
I am beginning to see a pattern. It seems most dislike of carp comes from grandpa and pop who was lead to believe back in the 30' and 40's that carp were going to destroy the more desirable local fish populations. It did not happen. As it turns out, carp are not really as bad as most game fish, as their diet does not include as a rule, juvenile and adult fish. It is important to keep in mind that fishing in the old days was all about food and not sport. Carp, just like JC's were not good food, so therefore bad or undesirable fish. I am not sure where undesirable got redefined as trash.

Since I am looking for some educated or at least thought out input today, can you tell me why shooting a fish to instantly dispatch it is somehow worse than putting a gaff in a fish or landing it in a net so that it can thrash around until it is smashed in the head with a club. I have seen a lot of halibut shot with game over results. I have also seen a lot of fish clubbed, sometimes repeatedly to get the job done. I have also seen a fair number of clubbed fish wake back up to get the process repeated. I have even seen many fishermen slit the gills on a fresh fish before dispatching it. If I was going to some ones frying pan, I think I would take the 38 route. Note: I do not condone shooting a fish if it is illegal. 4DaFryer, I am looking forward to your response explaining why shooting is worse than clubbing or just bleeding. How do you dispatch your fish?

When I was growing up they were called trash fish because they were bottom feeders. We also had an abundance of them in and around dairy ponds where manure waste was abundant. We also found them around our waste water plant. They are fun to catch but I don’t eat them. Another thing I was told was they had a lot of bones. To be truthful I have never tried to cook or eat one.

That is where I first fish for them.

Thanks, extremely informative response directed right at the question. Just out of curiosity, were there other fish species there. You would have probably had to try fishing for them as most do not expose themselves like carp.
