Well,,,,,,,,,,, I don't have a story, it is true happening. I did a lot of coon hunting most of my life. I wrestled in collage and I was always telling my team mates during practice time about my coon hunting stories. In fact, the fans used to start a chant when I would go out on the mat to wrestle and they would chant "Midnight," the name of my coon hound. Anyway, the 119 pounder was from New York, we were friends, and he had never seen a coon before and he wanted to go coon hunting. "It sounded like fun", he said. "Oh, it is" I said. We got together with a couple of other guys from Iowa who knew a little something about coon hunting and off on the "Big Hunt" we went. On the way out to the hunt Larry, the 119 pound New Yorker said to me "What do these coon look like" "Well Larry, you know what a cub bear looks like", Ya, Larry said. "They look a lot like them only a little bigger", "How much bigger?'" Larry asked. "They usually run around 75 - 80 pounds for a big boar or a sow". Ohhhhh, said Larry. "What do you shoot them with?" Larry asked. "You have to shoot them with a 22 long rifle, that the only thing you can use" "Will a 22 kill them? "No, but it will knock them out of the tree and then the dog kills them" Ohhhhh, said Larry. We let Midnight out and he let out a "strike bark" to let us know he was on scent. Midnight was a silent hound and he would only give you a strike and the next sound you would hear from him is a "tree bark", when he had treed the coon. Midnight started barking treed and as we started climbing the hill I could see that we had a "Christmas Tree" That's where there is a bunch of coon, a family, up a tree and as you shine the light on them there eyes shine back at you and it looks like a Christmas Tree. "Well, we got a problem here, fellas, when I shoot the sow out, the dog will get her, and then I'm going to shoot the others out before they jump out of the tree and you guys are going to have to kill them." "How do we do that?" asked Larry. "Grab a club!" "I can't find a club, will a switch blade work?" Larry was from New York, ya know. I said; "Ya, but you are going to have to get close". No response from Larry. I shot the old sow out and Midnight ripped into her and there was all kinds of yipping, snarling, and growling. "I'm going to shoot the kids out now, you guys ready?" No response from Larry. Bang, bang, bang, plop, plop, plop, all dead coon. "Larry, Larry, where are you?" Larry was down by the car, he didn't want any part of those cub bear. That was the end of his coon hunting.
Good thing he was not the driver.
LOL
Sad, sad tale you're telling there, bud. My guess is that you considered it to be "sport",....Larry saw it for what it is. Good for him.

Yup, just like catch and release.
Hardly comparable. At least C&R has some positive/humane outcome, successful or not. Guess the dogs were happy though, huh ?
Flyguy sums it up the best I guess. " To each his own " But one alteration there Fly. Changing ( his ) to their. Got to let the ladies in on this. Helen reminded us yesterday that there are ladies on here.
So to each their own.
Good to hear the harvest goes on still everywhere! Some folks only eat from the groceries store shelves with tons of preservatives. Some of us like fresh harvested food best!
Went fishing on a #2 flatland this past sat .I launched at about 8 am at the same time there's another guy putting in a beautiful ranger bass boat . We chat briefly then go do thang. Water color was bout 10'' vis.where I fished.Trolled 250 till bout 2 pm caught 23 bass up to 2.5lbs. Bout this time I see the same guy come under bridge , then gets on his trolling motor and I can tell he's not fishing but heading to ramp, next I see him got his paddle out and trying to paddle to ramp. So I decide to go tow him in I ask well it doesn't look like your having a great day at least boat wise but how did the fishing go he said not so good only caught 2 small dinks. So here I am towing a 50,000 dollar bass boat with my maybe 5000. dollar boat I using spoonplugging knowledge and tools have a pretty good day and his hi dollar boat and very little fishing knowledge had a bad day. Moral of story knowledge will out fish fancy gadgets evey time!
