Hello fisher friends. I have been reading the stage for some time now and drawn to jump in.
I am going on a float trip with another and we were pondering what we should tip the guide, assuming all goes well. It's been my practice to tip 20% for good service, which we split 50/50 as we did for the trip. Is this correct or am I missing something. Thanks to all and tight lines this year.

Welcome to the stage clarkey and sure hope you post some pics of that float trip. That does sound awesome and a little envious here.
In regards to tipping i would say yes to the split of the trip cost, but hand over the 20 % higher or lower as to your expectations to the guide yourself and not a together handover. Some folks may feel different on tipping and think that is to much or to little.
Other consideration to give thought to is the guide the owner or an employee? Owner gets all the money for the cost of the trip where as the employee may need the tip to make ends meet.

I'm with the other guys, 20% is about right. I always tip in case so the guy can stuff the in his or her pocket and not have to go thru the management to get it.
If there is a mate tip him directly. If no mate be generous with the captain, heβs working his ass off if heβs any good.
I always tip. No matter what they make,itβs not enough for all they do and 20 percent is about right
Though I tip the same amount to both captain and deck hand, I give the tip to each individually and directly. I never give the tip to the lodge or outfitter/owner unless they are also the captain. After 15 years of full time guiding, I guarantee that is the best way to get the amount to the person you want to get it. If at a lodge, tip the lodge staff and the guides/captain separately. On behalf of the guides and captains you deal with, Thanks.

Welcome to the Stage clarkey 20% seems reasonable unless you catch a record fish πβ Where in mass are you at? πΊπΈπ£ππ
Thanks Henry; I think my dilemma has been solved by all the replies I've received. I live just north of Boston in Melrose.

Welcome Clarkey!
20% directly to the mate, or guide. Captains are getting their money up front.
BTW, I'm in Bedford, not fishing much with the winds lately.
This is a fly fishing trip, so there is just one guide and I will probably tip 20%. I am in Melrose and seldom fish the salt.
Cool, enjoy your time on the water.
