Hey, I know this is a fishing forum, but I’m hoping some outdoorsmen out there may have the answer to my question.

I recently saw the tracks in the attached photos while out on a walk here in central NC. They obviously look Canine to me… but larger than any I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen wolf tracks in Michigan’s UP many times while hunting, and I grew up with a roughly 90lb German Shepard, and these tracks dwarfed both of those. Too big for a coyote, and out of the Red Wolf range. So If anyone has an idea of what animal could’ve made tracks this big, and on a military base in central NC… I’d be very interested to know. My only theory is someone walked out to the trail I was on with a Great Pyrenees, although I say that jokingly. Because I doubt it.

I’m surprised you have any deer or Elk left. Washington introduced wolves in my neck of the woods about 10 years ago, now we have very few deer and the Elk herd is suffering.

Doesn't a bear normally show five toes?

wow - that thing is HUGE.. Never realize how really big they are.
Makes the idea of a "pack" hunting raise your eyebrows.

Yikes! Those tracks look pretty fresh, too. I have a friend who’s a conservation teacher at the local college here, and used to work at a wolf sanctuary. I’ll send her the pics and see what she thinks.

yes, black bear tracks typically 5 toes. These are definitely canine. https://www.bear-tracker.com/blackbeartracksandsigns.html

Please do Betts ! Hope you're doing well young Lady ,,,,I guess I read a different History, but I'm pretty sure some of these guys are wrong,,, Man was introduced to Wolf Country! Not the other way around,,,we as human beings are just visitors, and should respect the Land &Creatures,,,, What say you ?

I am in total agreement with Jarheadfishnfool as it is we who should be the ones to step aside and let them pass unmolested.

Not sure of the exact Chief's name who said it, but the quote I do remember as going something similar to the following...

****If it weren't for the Beasts, Mankind would perish from a great loneliness of the soul.***

I took screenshots of your pics and sent them to her. She said it was hard to see/identify but thought it could either be red wolf or domestic dog. I was hoping for something more exciting than dog so let’s go with wolf, lol. 🤷‍♀️
