There was this bar in San Francisco, along in the evening, and even though it was Saturday night, the traffic was slow. In fact, there had been one two customers who had already left, leaving the barkeep alone to amuse himself.
Now, if he had not also been the owner of the bar, he probably would not have minded the absence of customers. Then, to his surprise and later, to his delight, in walked Willie Nelson, and on his shoulder was a parrot. When Willie steps up to the bar, the parrot hops down and helps himself to some of the bar nuts in a dish on bar.
Willie orders a whiskey and says to the parrot, “George, give us a song.” To which the parrot walks over wets his beak in the whiskey glass and immediately begins a perfect rendition of
Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.
The barkeep is amazed. He asks Willie, what else can the bird do? Well, without any cue from Willie, the parrot runs through a neat half dozen songs, country and western, and even other popular tunes.
Thinking of how this bird could help his bar business, the barkeep asks Willie, “How much for this singing bird?” Willie responded that he wasn’t for sale. While parrot ignores both and segues in Galveston, and does it so well, you would have thought it was Glenn Campbell singing. The barkeep said I will give you $500. Willie shakes his head as a negative answer.
Next the parrot moves on to Wichita Lineman and the barkeep said, “O.K. I will go $1,000 for this singing parrot. To which Willie says, “Well, I can see you are determined to buy the bird, so I will not take anything less than $2,500! The Barkeep, thought for a moment about how great a draw this singing parrot would be for his bar, said, “It is a deal, let me go in the back room to get the money out of the safe.”
The barkeep returns and counts out the money in $100 bills on the bar. The parrot is helping himself with the bar nuts. Willie folds up all the bills and said, “It’s a pleasure doing business with you” turns and walks out of the establishment.
The barkeep looks at the parrot and says, “What else do you know?” To which the parrot takes to flight, and as he goes out the door singing, “On the road again, have to make music with my friends……!” Just Sayin…RJS
