BIG catch of the day!

Lol! Out camping with the girls and went for a walk. Surprised to find out we are right across from the Paluxy River so I grabbed a rod and and snuck away for an hour just to see if I could catch anything. Found me a spot to fish from and realized I didn’t have any weight on my line. Did the best I could in the short amount of time I had. Wish I would’ve grabbed my tackle box and got out there earlier. Also wish I really knew how to fish cuz I know they’re in there laughing at me! It’s too windy now, but may try again before it’s time to pack up and head home. Anyone want to help a gal out with some advice? Like what kind of lure would YOU use? Is there a right time of day to go fishing? Hopefully I’ll get another shot at it if the weather cooperates:)

If you have any a small rooster tail or similar lure will catch bass, gills, crappie and catfish

Thanks CamT, I think trees have caught most of my rooster tails but I’ll have to dig around and see if I have any left! If not, I’m sure I have something similar.

Hi Lynnz,
Take a picture of the section of river you want to fish as well as your tackle box and perhaps we can recommend something? You did not get skunked, so you are better off than some of us 😂

This is what I’ve got, anything useful? I caught that little guy with the pop it. I do have a white rooster tail so I’ll give that a go. I really have a hard time getting those tri hooks out though and God help me if I were to hook a catfish. I don’t know how to unhook one for sure. Guess I’ll see if I can find a you tube of someone taking one off a hook just in case! If I research it I’ll never catch one and if I don’t, I almost certainly will

Looks like you are stocked with some good tackle, I would get some needle nosed pliers for removing hooks from all fish, it is easier than getting finger sticks.

One small fish is better than no fish.

That little white head with lack eye jig below a float should wake up the pumpkinseeds and might even entice a bass. start at two feet and just keep lowering until you find the fish. Just a suggestion: add a box of mixed size split shot and some 1/16 oz. jig heads to use with those yellow and red soft plastics. I would also add some yellow and white or pearl 1 and 1/2 inch tube worms. All very cheap. I am also a believer in water weighted floats with the rubber tube down the middle. That will allow you to get even the smallest lure or fly into deeper water. The bag of soft plastics looks good, but you need large enough worm hooks to use them as well as a few bullet weights to Texas rig.
I would look up how to rig a tube worm and Texas rig on YouTube. Have fun.
Given what I can see in the photo's, If I wanted to check for bass, I would definitely start with the paddle tail swim bait on the jig head.

if it were me, I'd try that bone colored popper. if nothing happens grab a chartreuse crankbait. i live in south central texas, the water is already 67 - 70 degrees. and they are hitting topwater more than anything in my arsenal, and I've got a pretty good arsenal. good luck.

You might try a beetle spin or similar lure. It has a single hook, no treble , and a small version will catch bass or sunfish.....my 2cents

Nice Shellcracker! It is a little early for surface lures. You should do well with Worms, snails or small slugs, Grass Shrimp or clams or Mussels. For artificials, try small Beetle Spins or Grubs
Shellcrackers have Pharyngeal teeth in their throats and will swallow natural bait deeply in order to crush it.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I tried to get out again Sunday morning after getting the trailer all hooked up and ready to go but all I could think about was how long the drive home was and how I really should be on the road before the rain started and the wind picked up. I was too stressed to enjoy fishing and couldn’t get my husband to agree that I should add another day to my trip lol So I fished for maybe an hour but didn’t catch anything. The water/weather was very different Sunday than it was Thursday, I’m not sure how much of a factor that is? Anyway, appreciate all the advice, will have to google some terms but I’m sure it will come in handy soon enough! Thanks!!
