500 miles today and no fish

I had been planning this trip to the Ogeechee River in southeast Georgia for two weeks, and today was the big day. I was so excited that I barely got two hours sleep night before last and NO sleep at all last night; in fact I suggested we get up a little before 4am and hit the road. I had the boat hooked up and everything loaded and ready.

After 4 hours of driving we made it, only to find that the rains in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia had flooded the river we intended to fish. I had checked the water level a few days ago and it was high, but not nearly flood stage. Recovering the boat would have been insane with the 10 mph current, so we tossed a few beetle spins and headed for the Ohoopie River. Same there so we tried some more and my wife lost a lure so we called it a day. The hotels were all booked up due to a spring festival and they were crazy expensive and dog beds, so we cancelled. No wonder there were no outside photos of the place.

We ate lunch and tried to work out way back but wound up going down three dirt roads and probably way out of the way. Garmin GPS blows; will send you down a pig trail or through a residential neighborhood to save you 15 feet. I grabbed the atlas and got us back on the main highway and made it back a little after 6. Best part of the day was the banana split at DQ.

Sorry to hear that. Welcome to the stage. I’ve been there before as I suspect most of us have. At least you did it safely and can try for another day. What did you put on your banana split?😁

Sorry to hear that Viking. This crazy spring weather has messed up a lot of waterways in the east. At least you made it home safely. And who doesn't like a banana split? By the way where are the pictures of the Ice Cream????

What an adventure. I hope that split was good. I do love DQ.

You should check the programming on the Garmin. Set it for fastest, not shortest. Gets rid if all the weird stuff.

Ah yes...I think we may all have had days like that. The reward ends up being something that was not even on the original "radar". Sorry to hear about the buggered up plans, and hopefully a re-schedule could be in your future!

Thanks guys; still looking for the "silver lining" in yesterday. I'll give lake Burton near Clayton, Ga a try for crappie. My only problem with that is I don't have a fish finder. I guess I can just troll around until I find one, tie a balloon on it and throw it back and follow the balloon. :)

A banana split from DQ what a decadent treat that used to be! I had to pick a hundred night crawlers to get enough to buy one of those. 50 cents they cost. Anyway you wrote a great testament for the value of a for real road map and one that we’ve all lived thru at one time or another. Besides that you got to spend a whole day with your wife, count it all joy!!👍👍😬

That’s a rough day. But a banana split is always good. I have a buddy that ends all fishing days with a stop at DQ

The tallulah river lakes are very deep. Have almost no shallow water, and are very nutrient poor
They have fish, but not in great numbers.

Sad, but a well written and delivered as ‘the day in the life’ of ardent fisher persons and being prepared for disappointment.

GPS are good in the cities but be careful using them on the open roads and if you are pulling a trailer be extra careful
