Of the group of lakes that I fish only one requires an inspection. So I'm not paying to fish the other six lakes, including the Delta. My boat has a small leak I can't find. It's always wet so on the advice of the Clear Lake inspectors I wash my boat with high pressure soap as the soap allegedly kills the mussels. They see the soap residue and I'm good to go. For tournaments they have inspectors that show up prior to launch. For the meet and greet guys if the tackle shop hours don't work you can go online and schedule an inspector to meet you at any boat ramp

Steve, here they recommend either steam cleaning, or vinegar and water sprayed on the boat and trailer. Bleach and water in the livewells and bilge. Our DEEP says soap and water doesn't work. So there's another problem, no one knows what exactly works. It should be standardized, coast to coast.

Yep. When you received your notice for your boat registration it states that you also need to purchase the mussel sticker. I believe it is $20.00.
OBG,
Sorry to hear what happened at Perris.
I was turned away a couple of weeks ago as well. I’ve attached a pic of what they’re looking for. Hopefully this info will help prevent others from having a similar problem.
Tight Lines!
Sounds like a money grab to me

It does if there is no inspection of subject boat! Sure can't do it remotely.

Thanks Fred... good info. Because in spite of the govment involvement I personally have no desire to inadvertently be the source of an invasive mussel introduction.
Lol and makes you’re boat stronger , last longer , more mussels
So, as I read this thread of posts, no one explained what the sticker does. I guess that the state of California asserts that if you buy a mussels sticker, it will stop the spread of mussels. Typical California!
I did the same at Lake Perris, but you can use your smart phone to show you paid for it, even at that moment, and they will let you in. Depends on who is watching the gate to tell you this.
I know the East Bay Lakes here in the Bay Area require an additional fee for invasive species inspection, each time you go to the lake. But once you pay for one, it is good for 30 days and you still have to make sure your boat/kayak is completely dry. I wonder if getting this additional Mussel Sticker overrides that? I am thinking it doesn't, because even though we have a fishing license, we have to pay another fee to fish on the East Bay Lakes. So many fees!!! Question is, is it really helping our fisheries?

I am almost a daily visitor to Contra Loma Res in Antioch. I gripe about many of the fees they charge. But the $5. fishing fee goes to pay for the fish that are stocked into the lakes. Contra Loma gets a fish delivery about once a month. Many of those trout are trophy size. They are not the small stockers that F&W uses but average at least a couple of pounds. I understand exactly why they are strict on the inspections. Contra Loma is a drinking water reservoir, and has water pumped in and out on regular basis. Those fresh water mussels can wreck havoc on under water pump equipment.

Time for me to vent. Had a really bad experience this morning. My wife and I get up early to go fishing at Lake Perris. Beautiful day and she really likes this lake. Get to the gate at 6:40am only to be told I cannot launch because I do not have a mussel sticker on my boat. I say, "What mussel sticker"? Told that you have to go through the DMV to get one and it is separate from your normal boat registration. I ask, "Why did the DMV not inform boaters of this"?
They don't know. Can I buy one here? No, you must go online. They tell me they have turned away over 40 boats in the past few weeks. Needless to say, I am really ticked off. I tell him that I have been to 5-6 other SoCal lakes in the last couple of months and no one has asked for this sticker.
My question to all of you Cal boaters, have you heard of this law?

Never heard anything about needing a sticker! I’m sure a lot of boater in Ca. Are scrambling to get one. Hopefully you can find out how and when you can get it on your boat, please keep us posted. As you no I’m not a boat owner, but I have a lot of friends who are.
The invasive mussel sticker has been required by some lakes in California for several years. Lake Tahoe has required it for at least 15 years. I would think most California anglers/boaters would know of this requirement by now. This is nothing new.
I’m sorry you had to find out after driving all the way to the lake.
