I was always told to use a long shank small gold hook. Not sure what size but thin. Since crappie are usually in brush if you get hung up you can straighten out the hook get your rig back and keep fishing without losing a lot of tackle.

Number 2 gold hook. If you get hung up. They have tendency to bend to come loose.

A 2/0 hook for a crappie ? Wow... kinda optimistic on what size fish you might encounter, huh ?
The only time I use a hook that large is catfishing or salmon fishing. "Paper-mouths" are rarely large enough to use anything larger than a #6 or #8..... the same size I use for steelhead. But then...I also don't use a baseball bat or an anvil to squish spiders, either..... never hunted doves with a howitzer, either !

Check out the initial post on the thread "Removing the Stink"..... didn't catch a thing until he "used the SMALLEST HOOK I HAD".
To each his own, I suppose, but overkill is overkill, regardless of quarry.

You might have your threads mixed up a bit there FOF.

Nothing about removing the stink until U posted it.
Just an observation.

A 2/0 gold Aberdeen is not too big for crappie larger than say 1 lb. I usually go with smaller hooks because crappie minnows are a bit overmatched by a 2/0 hook. If you go with an open style like an LO42 or a circle or Octopus style I would tend to go smaller.

Obviously you missed my point. The "stink" post was about how he CAUGHT NOTHING WITH BIG HOOKS..... only began to catch when he went to SMALL HOOKS.
To reiterate.....
I consider a 2/0 hook to be total overkill for a small fish like a crappie.... sorry to overwhelm you with analogies.

Next time I will just ask..."why the hell such a large hook for such a small fish ?".....is that more clear and to the point for you ?

As I said earlier, I use a #4 gold or red Aberdeen, or a # 6 or #8 L042 Eagle Claw for Crappie but have people use as large as a #2/0 gold Aberdeen on some rigs specifically in Santee-Cooper, Kentuckey Lake and lake Barkley. While we are discussing hooks, try the L 042 Eagle Claw in #6 or #8. Itm is a wide gap bait hook and you can snell it directly to the line.

Thanks for the info Jim.

I understand there are options, FOF just likes beating his chest when you don't do things or think like he does.

I do appreciate you mentoring me the last couple years in all of my mistakes and thoughts on fishing.

You have done more than anyone trying to make me a better person.

My hat is off too you.

Sincerely FOF.
