We caught quite a lot of them back when I was fishing freshwater lakes and rivers here in Texas. We called them Gaspergoo. We didn’t eat them, used them for cut bait some.
Yes they do have rocks in their heads. I was curious and cut some out one time.

You might mention the (pearls) are located under the vertical line locater behind the eye towards the tail, the stones are balance crystals that work like the water in your inner ear !
