Trout season starts on Saturday here in Pennsylvania so I got out my trout rods get them ready. I noticed that the insert in the tip of my favorite rod is missing. I've put new tips on plenty of rods before but it was always because the tip was broken off. So my question here is how do I get the tip off the rod without breaking the rod.

Carefully heat the tube of the tip-top with a match, lighter, or alcohol lamp, being careful not to melt the rod tip. Twist the tip-top off as soon as the glue melts. The glue is designed to do that, it should not be a problem. Good luck trout fishing.

Please see the glue in ceramic liners. An assortment pack is sure to have a match for you. Toothpick to put a little superglue on it. Keep you from removing it.

I realize the tip is hot glued on. What do you do about the rest of them? Ugly sticks in particular throw their rings for no reason. My last purchase, 10' Ugly Stik Catfish. I glued every eye first, before I got it wet. I like this rod, I want the eyes to last. Bought it for a surf rod. Took it to the river Sunday last to learn to cast it. What a joy. Paired it with a narrow Jigmaster 500. Throwing 150'? 4 oz. 15#. Drop shotting for a striper, no go. Didn't ball it up 'til I tried a 1-3/4 oz jerk bait. I think it will do it, just got to settle down. Feel it out.

With super glue you have a greater chance of breaking - hot glue is more forgiving.

Use the heat from a butane lighter sparingly until the glue softens and then gently pull off with pliers You don't want to heat it to the point that it damages the rod it self slow heat GENTLY remove. Slow is the key then clean off glue residue and install the new tip 🇺🇸🎣😀👍

Here is a method I developed prior to 2002: Here is what I do. I put the tip section in my rod lathe and attach a heavy rubber band to the tiptop via a piece of wire like a heavy paper clip or something (to try to insulate the rubber band from the heat) and stretch it under a good tension on the axis of the rod and secure the other end of the rubber band. Now I gradually heat the old tiptop near the tip end. when the tiptop tube gets hot enough that the epoxy/cement starts to flow the tiptop will fly off.

Most of you won't have a rod lathe, so get the rod or rod tip section secured. I use a news paper bundle rubber band that is pretty husky and I put a good stretch in it and fix the other end to hold the tiptop in good tension. Remember to pull on the axis (center line) Now heat the tiptop guide near the end and let the heat slowly move down the tip top tube. Just as soon as the adhesive is soft enough, the guide will fly off. What you are trying to do is to get the guide to release before the heat migrates further into your rod and delaminates it. Do not twist. As for super glue, at the factories the people working there use a super thin super glue (CA) that when a micro drop of glue touches the guide ring/frame area it wicks into the area around the ring between the ceramic ring and the guide frame. You can use hot melt glue to hold the tip top on your rod, make sure it is made for that purpose so it will have a little higher melting temp other wise some have found due to being left in a hot car/truck in summer that the hot melt softens and the tip tops fall off. I use a rod building 5 min two part epoxy. Don't stand at the end of the rod because the tip top flies off with good velocity.
