Does anyone know of any catfish punch bait that doesn't make your hands smell? I saw a post a while back about no smell bait it but can't find it. Thanks

What is a "punch" bait?

I think he is referring to a thick past bait that you stick the hook into and a gob sticks to the hook when you pull it out.
The idea as I read was use a stick or something to punch the hook in so you do not touch the bait.

Yep that's it. Most of them you don't want to touch, but I read somewhere that they make some that doesn't make your hands smell. It's supposed to release the smell when it hits the water.

Take a kitchen sponge, I think they are about 3 X 5 inches. Wet it and cut in 1/2 x 3/4 in. pieces. Place the pieces in a zip loc bag with some of your stink bait and work the bait in well. Take the pieces of bait out with a needle nose to bait your hook , scent stays on longer and your hands only smell like fish when you get home !

I've seen folks using sponges to soak up stink bait, and I've seen folks using some foul smelling baits. I found that I out-fished most of em with cut up fresh mackerel. Smells like fish. Washes right off if you don't like it. Or put on a pair of latex gloves. They're cheap.

If you wish to keep your hands clean, either use a tongue depressor, popsicle stick or such, to apply to the "spring treble hook", or wear disposable gloves. BTW.....IMO, if the bait DOESN'T "stink", I simply wouldn't be using it. Have yet to encounter any bait that ONLY releases scent upon submersion.
Growing up in Kansas, fishing farm ponds for stocked Channel Cats and occasionally muddy rivers and creeks for yellows and blues, we either used worms or "stinkbait".... usually a concoction of blood and cheese, such as "BJ's". Many were also caught with chicken livers, but I guarantee you that we rarely kept them in the cooler..... more likely we'd set them in the sun to "ripen a bit".
Of course, you could also just have a towel handy, along with some waterless hand cleaner. Don't guess that, without wearing gloves, I ever expect to have "clean hands" while I'm fishing. That would be equivalent to wearing white clothing when changing the oil in my truck and expecting to stay pristine..... ain't gonna happen, no matter how hard you try. Good luck with however you go.

Simple..! Just bring 1/2 lemon with you when going fishing, and use it, wiping it over your hands after touching any 'stink baits' and you would feel like new when getting home without hassles, and cheap too! :)

I've never heard of such bait but that doesn't mean it's not out there. I carry a tube of mint toothpaste in my tackle bags & on my boats to wash my hands with. Works great & the mint flavor leaves a nice smell on my hands & makes it easy to eat cheese & crackers between bites. Mint toothpaste from the dollar store works fine. When I have a good day cat fishing I usually smell the part. I find cutbait usually works better than dough & punch baits. Tight lines.

Punch bait has fiber in it so it will stick to a bare treble hook better. I use dip bait. You use a treble hook with a tube that has holes in it to hold the bait. I use a paint stir stick to push the hook and tube down in the dip bait. Wrap it up in a walmart bag after your done. If you decide to try it, get Triple SSS blood dip bait.

My granddad always carried a hankerchief that he had soaked in peppermint oil to wipe his hands with. He smoked a pipe and claimed the fish didn't like the smell of it. Who knows? I used to do the same when I used to smoke, but I used anise extract.

Don't need stink bait to catch catfish. Caught lots of catfish and never use stink bait. It smells. Use cut bait, chicken livers, nightcrawlers , plain chicken breast, and dough bait.

Look up Catfish Bubblegum. This guy that has it is a guide here in Texas and makes this stuff. He used to sell it on line , but now you have to drive to the marina where he's out of to get it. Too far to drive. I went with him on a trip and used the stuff and we caught lots of fish. It was pretty nice, you just reached in the bucket and took some out and molded it around your hook. It actually looks just like bubblegum(pink). That's why I was asking if there was any other no smell bait out there.

I've never understood why folks think catfish bait has to stink like something died. Catfish will eat just about anything that doesn't eat them first. The whole point in the scent is to attract them to it - they have a fantastic sense of smell. They will literally eat Ivory soap. I didn't believe it so I tried it, and sure enough. I've caught catfish whose guts were filled with cottonwood seeds. So I put out baits that have a lot of SCENT, but that doesn't mean that they necessarily stink. Mackerel is a strong smelling fish. But it smells like fish, not rotten cow brains. Mackerel will out fish any other bait. I garontee! There, I said it. Prove me wrong.
