Newbie needing some help.
Hey guys, just signed up today and already I'm asking for a favor. Haven't fished since 1975 and since I;m now retired I'm dusting of the old gear and about to go all in again. Need help finding parts and/or a solution for a early 70's model Abu Garcia 5000 that somehow seemed to loose its handle nut. I've serached on line only to be told they are no longer available. Emailed the manufacturer for a replacement or suggestion on which "new model" handle I could replace it with. Got to do something, it's really sloppy on the retrieve! Thanks.
Good Morning PJ, Sorry I can't help with your search. Only suggestion is to call the company instead of email. Sometimes I wonder on email request if they are actually read. Then consider is it worth the aggravation? The price on a new reel may not be as bad as you think.
Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search. Hope to hear about your fishing ventures.
Try your local hardware store, lots of times they have a good selection of different size nuts. Take the reel with you and try to find one that fits.
Good suggestion there dpacapt. I miss read the post, thought it was the handle. I agree with your suggestion and would add that ACE hardware in this area keeps some old stuff in the back room. He may have to ask for help. They also have an ordering source for antique hardware.
Hey Puddle Jumper! I was just like you 3 years ago I retired and took back up fishing again since the 1980’s, I got out my 5500c cleaned it up put on new mono line put on a casting lure went out in the yard made some cast got lots or birds nest went out and bought a new baitcaster with the double brake system couldn’t believe the difference in tech since the 80’s I’d buy a new reel and go fish and Fishon Fishon!!!!

Sounds like a good idea to me.
And Welcome PJ.
I'll give the hardware store a shout. Didn't think about that! Thanks!!
I may have a solution to your problem ! I was given an ABU 5000C a few years ago by a young neighbor who was getting rid of her ex-boyfriend's gear that was left behind when they split ! Still on the box and looked brand new/ unused ! I've included a photo so you can tell me if it's what you're looking for ! Been checking the 'net' and even placed photos on this site previously, but still no idea of the actual value; maybe we can help each other out ! Check out the attached photos and get back to me when you can !
Nice going Big A. Another reason this forum is so nice. Complete strangers helping each other. Good luck you two.
As stated, this item was still in the box and looked brand new, with hardly even a scratch on the mounting plate; it looks totally unused and looks to be from the mid- to late-70s, so if anyone out there knows roughly what it's worth a little shout-out would be gratly appreciated !
Big A, thanks for the offer but from the picture, it appears the handle is secured by a plate and set screw which would make your reel somewhat newer than mine so not sure it would fit my handle. If my call into the manufacturer does not bear fruit, I sure might be interested in your reel.

I would take the whole reel to an industrial supply company like Grainger's. They have zillions of different size nuts, and probably have one that could be used on your reel.
Don't remember metric being around in the 70's. Then again I was in my 20's I had other things on my mind then as far as screws and nuts went.
