What else do I need to get involved in the sport?

Hey y'all, my grandfather bought me a fly fishing rod for my birthday and the package came with a lot of things in it. I am wondering what else might be recommended to get me going in this sport. So in the package there is a rod and reel as well as several different kinds of tapered leaders, some flys, line dressing, tipper indicators, slip indicators, several different weights of tippet material, and some floatant. What else should I get before I start trying to learn this sport? Thank you very much!

Maybe some waders/boots, nippers, forceps and a bag (or vest). You’ll learn more about what you need as an individual (some people are very into gear, some more minimalist) as you go but seems like you’re just about ready to get started! Have fun :)

Oh also, does the reel have backing/fly line on it already? If not, there’s something else

Waders and boots are definitely not needed to start fishing.

You’re right though that nippers and forceps pretty much are. Get a cheap little chest pack or vest to put all the stuff in (you don’t have to spend more than $30 on whatever you get) and you’ll be set!

You need patience. Be prepared to enjoy your day not catching anything while having a great time.

Waders in some places are necessary for river fishing. Most of rivers have wooded banks which makes casting with a 5 foot ultra light spinning rod virtually impossible much less a 9 foot fly rod

I agree with Flybynight, it's a hole in our pocket that we pore money into. But I do love it.

Might wanna talk with local tackle shop. Ask them about ur questions. Be safe, stay well and tell someone where you will be fishing and the time you be leaving.
