Fred, our lowest water temp was 44* that I saw. the water temp. this morning was 50*. we've had one dy up to 80* last week and expecting snow this weekend. whth the cold snap it'll probably have water temps in the high 40's next week. Here spring has sprung as far as the fish go, they're thinking about spawning and feeding up.

I'd estimate ours is in the high 30°s at the most. Northern lakes still have ice. Some kayak guys are catching fish, but mostly with bait. Basically ice fishing tactics. Probably 2weeks before it breaks for good. I hope anyway.

Got about 3 hours today between rain showers and the Smallies came out to play. Pulled into one small cove just off the main channel the has two points side by side right in the middle. Made two casts with the tight line rig and hooked up, the fish went nuts jumping one after another. Finally got it landed and made a bad mistake, I didn't retie. withe eh 4 pound test it is imperative to retie after every fish and I know that well. Made another cast, let the rig sink and started twitching the rod tip. It loaded up and the fish on the other end was a heavy dude who headed right to the top and burst the water a good 3 feet. that happened two more times and I just knew I had the fish beat. got it to the boat and it made that one last run and broke off. It was a dandy, probably the biggest I've caught in several years but he'll be there for the next guy or time I get back out. Ended the day with the biggest fish, a 21 inch fat girl that thought she was a world record or she fought like it any way put her back and I felt a rain drop, got loaded up and the boat covered just before the rain really started pouring.

Thanks Betts, I did have a lot of fun. Doesn't happen often that one cove is loaded with fish like this or maybe they do and I'm just not there when it happens. Catching fish back to back is always a lot of fun even for an old guy.

Fred, I'd love to fish that cold water as long as it's liquid. Seems the colder the water here gets, the better the tight line method works.

I'd love to try it too Ivey, if I could figure out a way to keep it 60° inside my boat. LOL

Fred, I cheat. I've got a battery powered vest I wear under my coat, that keeps the core temp up so the extremities don't have to work so hard to keep warm. Haven't had to use it this year but on some of the colder days back when I tournament fished a lot of the guys froze while I unzipped my jacket to keep from sweating. Add that to a bone dry pair of cover alls, and a pare of rag wool gloves with the thump and fore finger cut off and I'm warm as toast on the colder days around here.
The way I see it I've only got a limited amount of days left to really enjoy this hobby/sport/obsession and I'm gonna try and get out there as much as my old bones will let me, weather be d@mned

Sounds like you have it figured out Mike. Once I get out of the slave pit, I'll have to look into this solution. Thanks for the info.

I haven't looked for one in quite a while but just looked at Amazon and there's plenty to choose from and some aren't priced bad at all if you use them a lot. Mine ran off a 12 volt battery that hung on your belt, heavy, so I put a different plug on so I could use the boat battery. On a cold day I will plug it in till I warm up then unplug till I needed it again. Think mine was made for snowmobile or motorcycle riders.
