Some old and odd reels.
I collect vintage fishing gear. My favorite is vintage reels from the early 1950's and 1960's. Here are three reels from about 1950 to 1955. They are referred to as side winders. The line came out of the covered spool from the side. They are somewhat of a cross between a spin cast and a bait caster. Some had drags these do not. No free spool and they are direct drive. So, when you casted them the crank turned. Each of these were from a different manufacturer. I've included some paperwork on how to use them. I think you will see why they were short lived.
I love the old reels to look at but give me the new ones of today to fish with.
Has anyone used a side winder?
They were before my time. I donβt remember them at all
I'm old enough but can't remember ever seeing one. Fishing constantly evolving ππ
Cross between Fly Reels and maybe Bait Casters. Mainly Fly Reels.
Those reels are in pretty good shape, Most of the ones I've seen are rough. It only took a couple years for someone to figure out that having the hole in front of the reel worked a lot better. Nice collection. Lets see some more
I would use them in a shadow box to decorate my wall. I give the designer credit for trying new ideas.

I love these old posts and to see those old reels brings back a LOT of memories when I started fishing about 1943-44.
THANK YOU!
My granddad used a direct drive reel for fishing ponds in East Texas. We called them knuckle busters.
