Fishing Reels for trout and Bluegill

Hi everyone,
I have a Shimano reel that has been decent, but I constantly have to take it apart because at the lowest end of reeling in the spool it will stick. I have tried to lift the little metal stopper up and that still hasn't fixed it.
I also think I am being skunked a lot and will try a new reel.
Suggestions for trout and bluegill reels?

Which Shimano do you own? I seriously doubt if it's your reel that's causing you to get skunked. But hey. I've been using Shimano reels for about 40 years. In my opinion you can't do any better. How much you want to spend? The Shimano NASCI is a great reel for trout and panfish at about 100 bucks.

I was kidding about the reel causing me to be skunked :) I was a college level baseball player and was superstitious. It is a shimano 2500HG about a year old. I am going to add new 10 lb braid to it since the braid portion I am using the fish are seeing it :)
Thank you for the suggestion. Fathers day is coming and I have everything already.

Sorry, been using the same Daiwa Silver Series 1000C reel since the late 70's, but they don't seem to make them anymore.

I see now they're considered "Vintage". Not sure what that makes me....
I also have my Dad's 700C, (1980's) but it's too small, in my opinion. It's a bit lighter, but doesn't cast as far, and everything's just too tiny for my hands.

Well do take a look at the NASCI. It's a huge step up without getting all crazy into the big bucks. Take care of it and it will last you a long time.

I have the shimano Spirit speaks of and I agree it’s a great real for the price. Even cheaper is a Pflueger and they have always performed well for me.

I played hoops in college as well. A couple small colleges here in Ohio. Ohio Wesleyan and John Carrrol. Where did you play?

Thank you for the replies. I played at SDSU (San Diego, not South Dakota) with Tony G. Yes I am old :)

I’m not much younger. πŸ˜‚ You played D-1 with a NFL hall of famer. That’s super cool!! Closest I get to that is I played summer league against Antonio Gates. Not a ton of hoops fans on the stage. Nice to meet you.

I saw Michael Cage play in a couple of games. He looked like a man out there among boys. I lived in San Diego in the 80s and followed SDSU pretty closely. After I retired from the Navy (89) I went there too for a couple of years.

If you like a little fight I would go to a
ultra light spinner. You don’t need much
for blue gills a bamboo pole will work for them a medium weight for trout will work
or a 5wt or 6wt fly rod & reel is good for trout or blue gills

These reels are what I have used for trout and panfish for over 25 years. When they quit working properly I buy a new one and save the old one for parts.

I have used the IX1000R on my 5' Shimano Clarus ultralight rod and it worked very well for many years. It is very well balanced. For under $20 you really can't go wrong.
I also really like the rear drag.

Lot of guys don't like the rear drag I like it myself easier to adjust when fighting fish this year I'm going to shut the drag off and use my finger to control the drag. I tried back reeling but couldn't get the hang of it until I watched a video of a guy using pressure on the spool with his finger for drag that way you just let the handle spin when the fish runs I don't know how it works but we'll see πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŽ£πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘
