Haven't eaten smoked smelt since I was a child,Grandfather lived in Wrangell Ak and caught smelt for the smoker,I remember pulling up his nets in the marina when visiting in the 70's.Old memories

I have not gone this year, but they have always been there in February and March in the past. I assume you know the best way to clean them is with a large scissors. I am glad you posted. I was trying to think of something to do with the rivers flooding, the lakes muddy and the Strait whitecapped.

Wear rain gear and dress for the wind.

Can tell you this much, your legal to fish smelt year round ,can use a dip net or pole and line with three treble hooks or nine single hooks jigging, cannot tell you anything about where or when smelt (run?)as I've never tried to catch them here in Puget Sound,I mostly target salmon, crab and occasionally flounder/sand dab/sole.

I just moved to the island from PA and I’m headed to cornet tonight at high tide to try for some smelt. I’ll fill you in on how that goes.

Hi PattyP, My son just went fishing this past weekend, somewhere south of Everett. Since I'm from Jersey that's as much as I know about where but he did get some smelt!!! The three kids each helped with the limit, too...
