Any tips or tricks you guys could give me to help cast farther would be extremely appreciated. lol. It is so frustrating casting 20 yards, when everyone else around me is able to cast 40yds+ with ease. Sometimes it isn't that big of a deal because the fish are biting closer, other times they are 30yds+ out and I am unable to reach them from shore. I primarily fish around bridges & beaches.

Setup:

7' Ugly Stick GX2 Med-Heavy

Penn Battle(OG) 4000

15lb braid (KastKing)

20/30lb fluoro leader

soft plastics w/ a 1/4oz to 3/8oz jig heads or live/cut bait w/ up to a 1oz sinker

Thanks!

Maybe you need heavier lures and jig heads. Also glass tips like uglystick are know not to cast too well.

Any recommendations for a spinning rod under say $75? Also would a medium rod cast farther than medium/heavy?

With that rod and setup With those weight baits, you should be able to cast way father than that. Id shorten the leader, maybe lighten the leader and make sure your using a tightly and properly tied and trimmed uni to uni knot...

Do you cast further with other setups? Try asking some people that you know cast far, to give your setup a try. Easiest way to eliminate your casting technique being the problem. At least that tells you what you should investigate further.

Sounds like you need more practice, the only reason I say that is because recently I have been teaching a friend to fish. He has a hard time casting, for him it’s more about the release. He’s not holding on to the line so that it falls straight down, but rather releasing at the wrong time so he’s not getting the distance.

I use the 7’ ugly stick Gx2 elite with a penn pursuit 2500. 15 lb braid with a 20lb flouro leader and I can cast a 3/8 oz lure at least 40 yards often times farther. You can have someone else’s try your rod for a cast or two, just to rule out equipment setup.

Check out this video. It might help out. https://youtu.be/TxOI3xdN-qY

First question, why 1 Oz. sinker? I use a 2 Oz as the 7 foot rod I have will go up to 4 Oz.
2) Why the heavy leader.
I just use 20 LB Braid and have no problem.

I had to look up your model of reel... it's a SPINNING reel, yes ?
If so, I think it is possible it's your technique. Can't think of a problem with your equipment that would limit you to 20 yards. Throwing a 1 oz with a spinning reel and a 7' rod, regardless of it's action(medium, light, heavy ?), You should EASILY get 40 yds, I am certain 60 is feasible.Throwing 2 oz ? 80, with ease. Get one of those practice plugs (usually yellow, rubber coated) and head to the park or school ground and simply practice your release, as mentioned above. Also practice side delivery while you are there, who knows, maybe the alternative motion will correct your distance. You don't mention whether you are ACCURATE at 20yds, or not. If it's heading correctly, but just not FAR enough.... it's your release timing. You say beaches,as well. Can't say I have ever used a beach rod shorter than maybe 9'. My favorite is 12', I have a 16'. 2 oz of lead and bait being another oz. or two, and I can nearly empty a spool on a size 40 reel with the 12'. Don't give up, it'll come. While I did shoot a lot of baskets as a youth, my go-to "self entertainment" was hours upon hours of practice casting...to this day....my Zen.

First off, my rig is a three piece Akios hellrazer 13’ in length coupled with an Akios Shuttle conventional reel. Using 20lb copolymer Line, And a 100lb braid shock leader with a 6oz weight, I am able to reach 100 yards or better on every cast. You need to get past the breakers. A longer rod is a must

And using the index finger as the trigger. A bullet cast goes farther than one that has the line acring up in the air. That takes practice to get the release correct. I hold the rod with the base shaft of the Spinning Reel between my little finger and ring finger, index finger slightly bent with the line on the ball of the finger. As I cast I straighten my index finer and the line then is released for the cast. Also I have learned that the more eyelets on the rod, the less line slap there is, so it goes farther. My 7 foot rod with 8 eyelets casts as far as my 9 foot with 5 eyelets. Just something to think about when you start looing for a new rod.
