Good morning fishing friends. I'm having a tough time being strong today. My wife has early stage dementia/ALZ. She was too tired to get up to go to Church this morning and I'm sitting here researching Wills, POA's and estate planning. We've been married 57 years and were high school sweethearts so have been together about 63 years. I could sure use your prayers for strength today. It's hard to put up a calm front when I think of the road ahead of us. Thanks in advance. This is a great group and I know I have your support and prayers. Randy

Your in my thoughts Randy, take care.
Sudako is a good mental one to try.
Start with the easier ones so that she won’t get flustered.
Maybe a small jigsaw puzzle to start with.

My thanks to everyone on the stage/forum for your prayers and support. My wife is doing much better the last couple of days. I think we stayed up too late watching movies a couple of nights and then a cookout at our granddaughters was tiring. Need to keep a more regular routine for sure. She does like to do word finds and crossword puzzles. She also does small jigsaw puzzles with the great grandkids and large ones with the two granddaughters. I have reached out to the county Agency on Aging and Colorado Legal Services who have help for elderly and low income. I think I can get the forms and help with POA's Wills and other needed health and financial forms there. Grand Junction does have an ALZ support office and I will look into that. Of course our pastor and other groups in the church are available to us also. We do have a son and two granddaughters here in town so that is a big help. Thanks again. I appreciate all the comments and support. Will keep you posted. God Bless you all. Randy

Randy, if necessary you could start a Go Fund Me page and maybe the church or whoever in social media can help out.

This group of people are a pretty decent support group as you can tell. I’m guessing your a fisherman at heart, so your already interested in the fishing stories. The Chitchat has jokes and stories that warm the heart or make you smile. You don’t have to worry about sharing your pain, because most of us have already been there. My favorite new word challenge is Wordle. (That is the correct spelling) Look it up on the internet, a new word challenge everyday, it is fun and makes your mind work

My father (90) is going through the same thing with my mother (89). He wants to keep her home as long as possible. He is doing a good job but he forgets sometimes about her dementia and gets short with her when he has to repeat answers to a question that was just asked 10 minutes ago. I know it is because he is tired, habits of a 67 year marriage, etc.. All this to say:

Who supports the caretaker?

You are going to need some help. Don’t be afraid to ask for it. There may even be an Alzheimer’s support group there.
My siblings and I are doing the best we can to support my parents. And we are always looking for ways to ease my father’s burden as her primary caretaker.
This disease of the long goodbye is hard and draining on all. I live about 6-7 hours from you and have friends in Grand Junction I can stay with. You need a hand or a day off to go fishing, let me know. I just got on this fishing stage site so I hope there is a way to message privately.
Mark
ps: I am a camp cook for a hunting outfitter. We’ll have some kitchen stories to swap while we fish!

Very sorry to hear about your wife and the situation Randy. My wife and I are dealing with something similar right now with her parents. Her dad just passed away so we have a number of things going on with a greedy sibling. My best advice would be to have an estate planning Attorney help you with all you mentioned, Will, POA, ect. It probably won’t be cheep, but it can protect both you and your wife and any assets you both have acquired through the years. Good luck and my prayers are with you both!

So sorry to have y'all go through this. My best friend's wife lasted 12 years with this terrible disease. You are in our prayer group.
