I googled them, and they are a member of the sunfish family, redeyes, found mostly in the Eastern U.S.

War Mouth, My great grand pa Called them government perch We fished for them together when I was a kid. From his stories, during the depression the US government stocked them in many of the rivers and streams in the south. They put them in milk cans on train cars and whenever they came to a bridge they dumped a can or so. They are very good eating and grow to impressive size for a panfish. The creeks, rivers and lakes all around this area are full of them.

we called them red eyes and would take a day or two each year to fish just for them in the neshaminy creek northeast of philadelphia at playwicki park. good time and fun scrappy little fighters . tasty too ! we would use garden worms or small spinners like a number 0 black fury. they liked semi fast water.

Caught one once in a creek back water just North of where I live and threw it back in, it looked like a brownish color Bluegill and wasn't sure if it had something wrong with it or not? Told a friend of mine about it and he said it was a war mouth bass ,I looked it up and sure enough that what it was.

Love the stories, memories of our elders. Their influence remains forever. I've read our fishless alpine lakes were planted by men hauling buckets of rainbows from below on mules. Clever and simple though not easy.
