Thought some of you from Ca. will find this information useful. Never pier or beach fish but hope to do some this year.

A neighbor and I had a blast doing just that. We would grab a six pack and a burrito. Take a rod and reel to Rodondo Pier. A really cool group of Mexican guys would bait our line.. replace hooks ..lead etc. gave them our Mackerel and kept a halibut or two and red snapper. It was so fun Friday and Saturday nights. If you figure out where some piers are you can do well. If catch a big fish may want a noose device with some coat hanger in the knot so you can drop the rope over the rod and keep the loop open but when get the rope over the main body of fish you jerk the rope quickly to tighten up the noose onto the tail of the fish. Then you can pull the fish up over the railing if pier

Me too. Cool method Jeremy mentioned!

I’ve used my dip net (designed for minnows) but if you put a long rope on it you can get it down into water and land fish with it. There used to be a spot in CLE where steelhead could be caught but you where 20 ft above the water on a cat walk under the freeway. Landed many a Steely that way.

It's so odd that the url opens the page to that specific area. I grew up fishing those exact piers, jetties, and wharves of Santa Cruz County. Spent most of my summer days either surfing or fishing those spots. Strange coincidence. Hope you get to give it a shot!

What years was that. I graduated from Seaside High in 67. I often surfed and fished those same areas as well as Monterey wharf and Canary row before it became a tourist trap and got shut down to fishing.

From the wharf to Pacific Grove there is no more rock fishing? As a kid remember the fish shack on Monterey beach and caught crabs with hand line where the shack was. Plus my dad would rent boats from there and ROW out in the bay and we would fish. Should has change, still go back and kayak along Cannery Row once or twice a year. Good old Seaside, bet that was a tough school in those days being a Army town. Done basic at Ford Ord.

Born and raised in Santa Cruz County but I left the area March of 1976 when I joined the Navy at age 19. So you could say starting I started fishing there in the mid-60s as a toddler tagging along with my Dad and eventually on my own until the Navy. I usually went fishing anytime I went home on leave over the next 22 years of my career but haven't been back in the area since 2009.

I would call California Pier Fishing as being great, but not so good at fish catching.
Need to pay attention to tide tables. Warning signs in Long Beach area warn against eating due to marine pollution at all times.

You can use a crab 🦀 ring with a long rope
It works easy
