Going to look at Pontoons today.

Thanks, guys, all of your great advice is appreciated.
Have fun shopping Fly. I have always wanted one but my latest boat is roomy and not sure if I will get one ever. Your lucky your lady likes boating etc.

Do you guys have any thoughts on that matter? I'm going to look at both new and used. I'm going to make sure that it is not underpowered and that it doesn't cost too much. Well, I know that it is going to cost too much. Do you guys have any other red flags to look for? I figured I might as well get one, I'm not getting any younger, and Marion can't get into or out of a boat, and she likes to go to the River.
Had a 24' w/115 evenrude in the 90s I built to sleep 5, galley, head, etc. Loved it for hauling church groups on tubes & skis etc. Recently ordered a 16' small pontoon from Pond King in TX with a 30hp (could have been 40hp) Bimini & travel cover (we drive & fish all over the US). Pick it up Mar 14. Same problem, wanted more stability than our 14' aluminum. Plan on doing a lot of fishing from it. We generally stay of smaller lakes.
I would get a tri-toon if possible and lifting strafs and at least 150 H.P. if you are going to be using in river current and or hauling a few people. The fishing models have live wells and a lockable storage for rods and gear.

I’ve only been on one but I loved how it was on the water. Actually, it was in California, on a private lake. It was very comfortable. There were seven of us and it was a blast.

I like Crest Pontoons the best for many reasons.

As a Marine Surveyor and someone who rents pontoon boats a few times a year here are my thoughts.
If your going to be on big water tri-toons are the only way to go. They handle the waves much better. Also, you can never have too much power. Spend the money on a decent upgraded HP outboard. Four strokes are recommended. I've used all brands of outboards. Big fan of Suzuki four stroke outboards. ..extremely quiet & economical. Also, consider if you're going to mount an electric trolling motor. If so, you'll want some sort of forward deck space and hook up for the trolling motor. Additionally, a Bimini top is very highly recommended. Storage, storage, storage is very important. Many now have a small head aft under a canopy of sorts.
Many are now designed for fishing. Casting decks front n rear. See many on the rivers n lakes around here. Wildest one I saw had twin 250 Hondas on it. I'd get fishing model easier to party on fishing model than fish off party model. Depends which you'll be doing the most 👍🎣
We purchased ours used at an estate sale for far less than I would have paid at a dealership. It was a 24 ft Harris Kayot. I later purchased a trailer for it and had a full enclosure made. Fortunately, we were able to dock the boat in the Spring and not have to pull it out until late Fall. We enjoyed our investment for ten years and only sold it because we were relocating across the country. Our sale price was $1000 less than we had invested so that wasn't a bad price for years of enjoyment.

Easier to buy a used pontoon than other varieties. Mechanicals are pretty exposed and easy to inspect. Same with the toons and if they are foam filled that’s even better. Seating, flooring are easier to repair replace. Old go pretty cheap and a fixer upper can be customized from a pleasure craft to a serious fish hunter. Good luck.

I can’t wait to see what you pick. I have trouble getting my family to commit to a fishing day so I can rent one to see if I like it. For now I’ll stick to my inflatable one man pontoon, but I’d love to have something I could fit a bunch of them on. Good luck, you’re a smart guy you’ll find the right fit for you and your wife. You’re lucky that she’ll go with you.

A friend was about to buy one but somehow found out it had water in one of the pontoons. It was fixed under warranty. They gave him a new pontoon. I think he might have tilted the boat and pulled the drain plugs; and water ran out of the one, Something to check.
