St. Lawrence River

Just wondering if any of the members have knowledge of the St. Lawrence River. The wife and I are thinking of taking a trip to NY this spring/early summer and would love to get into some of those big old smallmouth in that area. A guide name or general location to get on some of these big girls would be greatly appreciated.

I just know it by reputation, but the Thousand Island area is a great place to start looking. Should be a lot of guides etc listed on line. You should be familiar with most of the fish available. Try " fishingthousandislands.com

That would have been my first suggestion as well, but you might
also want to consider Lake
Champlain, as it has long held
a reputation for 'smallies', as well
as plenty of largemouths, rock
bass, land-locked salmon,
several species of trout, yellow and white perch, and northern pike !
It's a fishing smorgasborg !

Dean Meckes is a fishing guide out of Clayton, NY
I forgot the name of his business but you should be able to find him by his name.
It's located on the mouth of Lake Ontario.
Watch the weather because that's a big lake and the water can get real rough.
Good luck

If you decide to go somewhere else in NY. Put a post up or contact me directly because I used to compete up there on state level bass federation for years. I now live in SC. Take care
As someone who grew up in NYS, never fished the St. Lawrence, worked on it a couple times as a young man and know of its multi-species reputation...Do not discount the MUSKIES (probably spring & fall). The St. Lawrence River has a long history of some heart-stoppers. I vote muskies.

What area are you visiting? What is the town nearby?

Used to go up there 1 week almost every year. Beautiful country, great fishing. Took a few years off but returned again about 10 yrs ago. The goby took over all the fishing spots i had in the river itself. They were like locusts, i mean stacked on top of each other. It really soured me on it to be honest. I understand if you get a calm day and can head out on Ontario they still get great smallies there. Been out on the lake in a bass boat but wouldnt do it on a windy day. Take your life in your hands if you do. Still nice there but my judgement is clouded because of the great memories of yesteryear.
Ivey: That entire region is an absolute fish haven. From Plattsburgh west to Black lake and between is not only great fishing, but beautiful as well. The river is a terrific fishery and the area is historically fascinating. You and family will certainly enjoy your time, as well as fishing, there. Everybody should see it at least once...hope you get a chance to go.
