Hey all. I am thinking of taking a very small sabbatical from life, loading up my kayak and doing a little bass fishing in Florida. It has been a dream of mine to fish lake Okeechobee for many years now. From what I ha e seen bass seem to be much bigger in the south and being from Ohio I need to get away and get a line in the water badly. My question for everyone is has anyone fished Okeechobee on here or can they put me on a good lake in Florida. Just remember I am doing this on a kayak.

i have not fished the big O in 5 years but if you want a different lake East Lake Toho is the place i would go. Go out of southport boat ramp get to the main part of the lake paddle to the right you will see the locks the weed bed on the right side holds lots of bass.

Hey Aaron i remember when you purchase that yak, i believe 1 1/2 years ago. Didn't you do a trip similar to what you want to do or was that someone else?

Yea Aaron only reason i remember is the user list was a lot shorter 2 years ago and you were asking questions about yaks and had mention what sounded like an awesome trip.

So best of luck on this new venture, hope you take us along with pics of course.

That's great as long as they're encouraging you to return!

Right now the bass in the big (O) are in pre and post spawn. The larger fish in both stages are relating to the deeper weed areas , not in the shallows. There are smaller fish in the shallower weeds but the quality fish are deeper. There is a mid day lull going on at the moment and Shiners get the best action, they are expensive so take $$$$$ !

I lived in Fla for twenty years and fished the big O quite a bit. It can be tricky to locate bass because of the conditions changing due to weather. Cold fronts shut them down and if the wind changes direction the fish will move and you could be paddling for quite a bit to find them again. The south end of the lake always seems to be better but I would save yourself a couple of hours driving and fish Lake Toho in Kissimmee. Check out Dean Rojas' bag on Toho of 45 lbs. I go down in February and fish for about 4 days. Last year I caught a 9.5 pounder. Lake Toho has all kinds of cover, lilly pads. hydrilla, kissimmee grass and more. Always look for gin clear water to help locate fish.

I live on the SW corner of the Big”O” and fish it a lot. If you are looking for the hottest lake in Florida for Big Bass I would strongly suggest Headwaters Lake. It is West of Sebastian Florida and produces large bass in big numbers. Check out Hooked on Headwater FB page and U-Tube videos. You will not be disappointed.

Aaron 124,
Lake George on the St Johns, mid to late Feb....Salt Run would be a great place to Kayak fish for bedded bass....put in at the head, plenty of protected water to fish, and good bed fishing....
