Advice on how to cast lighter lures/spinners

Hello,

Im new to fishing with lures and was wondering if anyone has any advice on how I should be rigging lighter spinners and how to get some more distance on the cast. Can you add sinkers for extra weight etc.

I'm running a light spinning reel with 10lb mainline.

Thanks in advanced

Good topic.
Optimizing casting distance is a combination of lots of different variables.
I’m assuming spinning tackle so we will focus on this.
For lighter lures, the rod action is a prime factor. During the cast the rod needs to load up, this provides the energy needed to launch the lure.
Lighter lures need lighter a action rods with a fast to medium fast taper. Also rod length plays an important role, with longer rods having an advantage

Next comes the reel, different reels naturally cast further. This is due to the way the reel lays the line on the spool.
Most quality reels have this figured out.

Next up is line. Due to the thin diameter and little to no “ memory” , braid casts further than mono.
A common mistake I see a lot is under filling a spool.
The line should be loaded to within 1/8 inch from the spool rim.

If you already have a rod /reel , snout the best advice I could give is switch to braid, fill as described above and add splitshot weights as needed to get more distance

You could change your rod. I went to a 8 1/2 steelhead rod and braid. Takes a bit of getting used to but I gained a lot.

If adding weight such as split shot, I suggest you ad it 18 to 22 inches above your spinner. At that distance it should not interfere with the spinner, spook fish or become difficult to cast.

Ben's advice is good, as always; also, I've found 6 lb braid is about
all I need for most bass walleye. and certainly panfish and trout fishing.
This will help you get distance, even when combined with a flourocarbon
8 lb leader.
