Has anyone found a way to fish when the ice is not strong enough to go ice fishing but there is too much to fish with a float or a spinning or a feeder?

(i meant from the bank, i wouldnt go on the ice)

Any warm feeder creek may keep an open lane. Try there
One of my most memorable outings was very early march in Arkansas.
We were on the boat and actually had to break ice to reach open water.
There was skim ice. Sunny day, Probly high 30s
Make a long story short. By accident I threw my jig and pig up onto the ice.
Pulled it off the edge , let it fall and got bit.
Seemed the fish were holding at the edge and ambushing anything that came along.
We got several good ones doing this

Plus O2 levels plummet the places with water coming in have some o2 in it. With ice blocking the wind from transferring oxygen fish need.

Caught some nice rainbows like that at a reservoir one time they were just hanging in the open water hook a real nice one it jumped landed on the ice came unhooked and we watched this huge rainbow flop around on the ice until it fell back in never forget that day was sunny but freezing cold

Several times we’ve just heaved big rock out there and broke the ice. Cast your bait past the hole and let it drop in as you reel over the hole. As soon as you bait gets in the hole trip your bail and let it drop. Works best if you’re close enough to the bank where you can reach the hole with the tip of your rod. We catch lots of perch and rainbows at a local lake this way. Right off the boat/fishing docks.

I grew up on the Mississippi River in the northeast part of Iowa, small town called McGregor. My dad loved fishing for walleye’s. He had a real small thin boat that he would load up some fishing gear in and would pull it across the river until he thought it wasn’t safe, get in and bust the ice in front of him with a pole he made. It was a combination of a paddle with a spike on the end. He would brake through the ice, then paddle his way through, repeating the process until he got to a spot he wanted to fish. If you do what my dad did, tie a rope onto the pole and tie it to the boat. He lost his first paddle/spike once and learned a lesson. 😂😂.
