That's crazy because they're not mammals.

Never eaten one but watched Cajun UTube (thanks FourchonLa): the filets certainly look great and Cajuns know a thing or two about good eating. We have bowfins in NC as well, and they are not highly regraded. Bowfins are highly predatory and great fighters. I feel their status should be elevated as a gamefish, regardless of local opinions as table fare.

You’re welcome. As with many fish, the smaller ones are the better eating. I’ve eaten parts of cows, pigs and chickens I’d never thought I’d eat but it’s all in the preparation.

About the breathing air. I remember my dad catching one and throwing it on the grass to die. The next morning it seemed to still be alive. The grass was very wet from overnight dew. Is it possible this fish was still alive?

Here you go Ed.

Like gars, bowfin are bimodal breathers, which means they’re able to breathe in both water and air. They utilize their gills to breathe underwater and have a specialized gas bladder which allows them to breathe in air similar to a lung.

They should be released as they are an important part of the ecosystem (at least in my part of the country where they are native). They were stocked in some waters in the 1800s.

Very few fish are trash fish (my definition of trash fish is non-native fish that are harmful to the ecosystem such as carp and other invasive species).

Here is a photo of my wife with a bowfin of around 10 pounds:

When bowfin gulp air, does it make a noise?

Bowfin must be related to red drum. Both have spot near tail

They are not very good eating but as a sport fish their fight exceptional.. It an ancient species and does not tend to overpopulate so enjoy the fight and release them for others to enjoy. They do have powerful jaws so do not grab them by the lip.

I spent sometime at Scott AFB. The Philipino wives could cook up bowfin that anyone would like.
