Would 50 lb fluorocarbon leader attached to 25 pound mono be strong enough for bottom fishing?
About a month ago I got a senator 4/0 (circa 1970s) that I restored and spooled with 25 lb Ande pink. I chose this line bc I had intended to use it mainly as my fighting reel for a king rig. For Christmas, though, I got a gift certificate for a bottom fishing trip (!!) out of Atlantic City, NC. I’ve never done offshore before so I’m not quite sure what to expect. I know the charter company provides rods and tackle and whatnot, but I’d really love to give this reel new life and get use out of it since I’m really proud of my restoration work. So I guess my question is, instead of completely despooling the 25 lb and respooling with something heavier, can I just tie on a heavier fluoro leader? Thanks!!

I use 25lb braid on mine and then I tie a 3ft float n leader to it. Take your rig with you on the trip, I guarantee it will work better than thiers. It will work perfectly for party boat 🐟 I'm retired live in Mass and go out twice a month even in winter. Have fun and tight lines.
Contact the Captain of the boat and ask him. He would be able to give an informed answer.

It all depends what type and size of bottom fish your targeting, also 25 lb test line should have a drag setting of 8 to 9 lbs . I would take it with you and just ask the capt or mate they will inform you if it’s sufficient. If it’s a head boat usually a lot of people and that makes it difficult to play a fish with 8 lbs of drag. hope you get to use it
That sounds the same as putting a wire lead on a spool of thread! Why not have your floro carbon tied on the end, in a lighter line. Or just braid!!

Here in Florida we use 65 lb braid to 80 or 100 lb Flourocarbon when gag fishing only because of the structure we’re fishing in it really gets chafed up and needs to be changed prior to every trip
