Incredible. We got one close to that size on a drop line many years ago. Couldn't imagine trying to real one in. Great job!

Luckily I was using a size one octopus hook that somehow managed to set perfectly in the corner of the mouth or else the teeth would have cut my line.

Darn thing almost looks prehistoric. Would not want to put my toes in the weter knowing they are around. Nice catch WJ.

Sure is a nice catch, make me wonder about waiding or swimming.

Most places where there are alligator gar are still generally safe for swimming, as they are not usually aggressive, with the possible exception of disturbing a nest ! Muskie and pike are more aggressive, and have been known to attack people on certain occasions ! Still, that doesn't mean it can't or won't happen !

Kinda like noodling digits don't grow back.

But it could happen in almost all waters these days.

No one knows what has been released by the public.

Regarding that gar; in a manner of speaking, they ARE prehistoric, as their fossil record extends back over 100 million years, all the way back to the Cretaceous ! They're sort of a living dinosaur in their own right, along with alliga-tors, crocs, caimans, etc. !
As to the aggressiveness
of gar versus muskie/pike;
I remember reading an article some years ago about an accident involving a large musky ! Seems a 17-yr.-old kid was water-skiing and was at the receiving end of his friends playing 'crack the whip', where they turned the boat around in a tight circle, whipping him around swiftly at the end of his ski rope ! He lost it, skimmed across the water about 50 feet or so and landed in a weed bed about 20 feet from shore ! Startled a large female musky on her nest and got chewed up to the point where it took 117 stitches to sew up his leg ! This was supposedly a true story as reported by a popular hunting/fishing
magazine !
