Hey vdawg
A fellow New Bernian here. Don’t know what other fishing you have done but this is a very different place to fish. Best advice to try to get some ideas is to get a local guide. There are several around. This time of year, the speckled trout are running in the shallow tributary streams to the Neuse. I caught my first one of them several years ago on Christmas Eve. The coastal waters also offer a huge variety of fish but there is definitely a learning curve. I don’t really do any fishing in this area anymore. We keep our boat on an inland lake and it is mostly crappie, bass, and catfish.

Forgot to mention, there are also several fishing clubs around. Those can be a great source of information and a chance to meet up with some possible fishing buddies.

Thank you both.
JimM I'm starting to realize that seems every time I go try. The Spidey sences we're not even tingling. My next try was going to be in a creek but there are many. I like your idea of a guide and can't say I haven't thought about it myself. I'm kind of a hard headed Italian. That really hate to take an L just yet . But when I start beating the dead horse I'm sure I'll reach out to a guide .king Mac will do and thank you. Glad to hear there are some fish around at this time.

You're in my old stomping ground! I grew up fishing the Neuse and Trent. My luckiest spot is actually up a tributary there called "Bachelors Creek". I'm sure you can probably find your way with GPS, but it's up stream, past the entry point to the Hatteras Yachts basin. Another good but tricky area is along the edges of the river, where you see a lot of cypress knolls sticking up. The black fish tend to hang out around them, and usually put up a fun fight, as they try to tie your line around the stumps, lol. They tend to get up to a pretty decent size, from 2 to 6 or 8 pounds, from my personal experience. Now I know everyone loves artificial bait, but I have to say, in the Neuse at least, I always caught my biggest fish on night crawlers and live crickets.... just sayin'. Best of luck to you!!

Back in NJ we weakfished early spring when water temps were still a little cold we would float night crawler under a bobber with good success.. I haven't tried worms here yet. Thanks I will pick some up ...
