Gonna check out fishing spots from Redding south to Colusa this winter, hatchery trout and steelhead will be the target. Come spring I will try my luck in Colusa for some stripers, anybody that has fishing experience on the upper Sacramento River please jump in and share your stuff.

I lived in Colusa in the early 1960's. We used to catch a lot of stripers on chunks of sardine, right next to the state park, maybe 50-100 yards upstream from the boat launch.

I don't know what it would be like now, the river is changed. Someone told me that it was the corps of engineers who tore out all the graceful, shady trees along the river and lined the banks with big boulders of rip-rap. They've converted the river into a big canal there at Colusa.

Sorry Andy, I've never fished over there and have no idea where the good spots would be.
However, I'm always interested in findin out more about new places to striper fish.

There is a place between Colusa and Yuba City called Lovey's Landing, just north of Meridian. You can google it. They have a launching facility and a bar and restaurant which is currently closed for renovation I believe. If you go there you can talk to folks there about fishing that area. It's right on the Sacramento River. I've never fished the Sac for stripers or salmon. My river has always been the Feather. Different critter I'm sure.

That's fun part about fishing! every lake, stream or river has their secrets... and they don't give them up easily. They all fish differently.

Book a drift trip on the Sacramento out of the Fly Shop in Redding. You will learn more than anyone can put on here. If you pay good attention, you will learn what flies to use (crickets are number one when using bait) as well as how to drift your gear in the river and locations you can reach from shore. I used to do real well on rainbow between Redding and Anderson right after most people went home, just before dark. The fish would move closer to the bank. I believe that area is all catch and release now, but don't hold me to that.
