I have been fishing for a while now, mostly trout in the lakes and streams in the sierra Nevada mountains though. I have been out on a twilight boat a couple of times, and always just used the charter's gear.
I (finally) got a decent kayak and want to take it out and fish some kelp beds/rock structures just offshore in southern California. What would be a decent setup for me?
Would my trout setup (spincaster, 6.5 ft, medium, fast action rod) work with some heavier line? Or do I need a new rod/reel setup? What kind of bait and weight should I be running?

Take two rods minimal. Medium and medium heavy. It depends on what you come across. Be prepared.
