The "Lake Trout" that T151 is referin to aren't "Lakers" Macs. they are just planted trout. Some are Cutbows and can weigh up to 20 pounds or so. Rainbows and Browns get pretty big as well there too.
It's a warmer water lake than most Mackinaw lakes. Lower in elevation too. Google it and see some of the fish they catch out of it. They're HUGE.

You are correct saw! In my haste to initially reply I was focusing on the heading and while I did read the text body I was still thinking of "lake trout" like the mackinaw's! I assumed that the CA lake mentioned was a big one up at some higher altitude and I did not bother to Google a location! Looks like I started by own goose chase on a misunderstanding! Sometimes "speed reading" can get you headed in the wrong direction!

For "penance" I am posting a lake trout that was caught in a stocked lake (in Michigan)...cute little rainbow...which is what the original post was after!

Haste makes waste...as they say! Hopefully nobody will become misled!

Yeah FY. It is misleading when you read the heading.
I live in Cal. and know of the trout that he is referin to. That's the main reason I knew what he was talkin bout.
It's one of those lower elevation lakes near the Sacramento Valley that we call a "Pay Lake". You pay to do anything and everything there. But they stock it heavily through the year and they also have a good population of bass, crappie and catfish in the lake as well. Just wish they didn't charge you SO much to fish there, that's all.

I have fish that lake quite a bit with my father but it's been awhile since I've been there. The Trout are cutbows (cutthroat/rainbow cross) they are usually up close to the surface. My favorite setup was a small half/half dodger with a threaded worm trailer. If you use ultra light gear be ready for a fight as the fish are usually on the big side ( 2 to 3lbs ). Don't be afraid to change things up if they aren't bitting, to a small Rapala or different dodger. Just drop your bait straight out behind the boat slowly. I used to point my rod out the back and then slowly move it towards the front of the boat while letting out line. Do this about ten times or so, you may need to do more or less to find the sweet spot.
Good luck, if you have anymore questions let me know.
The Mad Moose.

A little known scent trick is rubbing your lure with Bacon, don't laugh, it works ! Fished with a canasian guy and he doctored up half the baits with Bacon and left the others grease free , the greasy lures caught almost ALL the fish !

Agate : Bacon, for trout, I wonder what the 1st guy was thinking when he came up with that idea.. I usually fish FOR hogs, not with 'em. Can't wait to try this out in a comparison test.
By the way, my favorite and most productive bait for trout is not power bait, but the artificial maggots produced by Berkley. Great for other panfish as well. White ones seem to work best for me, but I haven't done comprehensive or comparative testing on this. Pink ones in stained water.
Thought this might amuse ya as the Agatemaggot. Thanks for the tip ! nutz

If you look up the lake you are going to on the internet sites will come up of how and where to fish that lake at this time of year. Flicker shads in green and blue are hot bait in all lakes. #5 and 7 are the favored sizes. Fives are about an inch smaller and have smaller hooks on them. The 7's are bigger and have bigger hooks that make hook ups easier but of course the trout like the smaller flicker shads the best. A fish finder will definitely save you time and gas money in trying to find the fish type, depth and location of your favorite species. I would definitely troll the shallows using shads or rapalas( jointed work well) at 9 to 13 feet. Then we do zig zagging S turns across the lake if we do not find them in the shallows to find where they are schooling and stacking up. Fish like to bite better when there is a little riffle on the water as they do not get as spooky as when it is flat. In our area there is a site online that also tells us the best fishing days. on Lake Roosevelt Washington. Probably have one for your lake of choice as well.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to try that on Lake Trout in Flathead lake next summer. I will let everyone know how that turns out.

I’ll be going to Lake Amador in CA and renting a boat. Will be in the 50s early morning. Looking for some suggestions on catching some trout in a lake. I haven’t fished for trout since I was a kid with my dad. It’s just a small Jon boat.

I will bring: Couple different ultralights, lights, medium and a medium heavy. Power bait, panther martins, kastmasters, mice tails, worms, spinners and some deep diving lures for trolling.

Besides fishing off the bottom on a Carolina rig or fishing from the top off a bobber, are there any other recommendations you guys can give? How exactly should I fish a lake during the early morning and afternoon? Should be around 40s very early and top off at about 60s mid day.

Thank you

My neighbor fished it last week and they caught limits on a dodger with a night crawler trolled at 1 1/2 MPH.
