Release, always... Over the years I have gotten much better at catch and release than when I was a kid. When I lip a fish, I immediately put my other hand under its belly , no matter how big or small it is , lay it on my boat deck, and remove the hook(s) . Then, lower it back into the water , no dropping or throwing. Sometimes I use a forward/ backward motion to make sure water is flowing through the gills, then let them go....
I really do not know what I would do. It has been 8 years straight without catching any keeper. I do fish with the intent of eating whatever I catch but that idea has faded away.

I gotta keep all the walleye; they taste so goooood. And the small pike under 3lbs; close second.
I remember when catch & release started.
It really brought back our numbers of fish.
Now it's samon from the store, Mrs. Pauls or Gorton's fish sticks or fellet.

I release all freshwater fish, even injured, the seagulls and turtles need food also. Salt water I will keep 1 striper or a couple tautog, maybe an albie, all others are released. my fishing buddies give me their bluefish cause I make an awesome smoked pate. One of the guides I fish with in Florida (after releasing 30 plus reds) said "those guys are my future catches" C & R fishing is important to maintain the fisheries, keeping the limit helps to reduce overpopulation in overstocked or well fed ponds. I don't freeze fish so I don't stock up on my catches. back in the 70's I used to watch the trout slaughter on opening day weekend. guys would go home with 20-30 trout ( and clean maybe 2) guess where the rest went.............

I’ll release all of em. If I want to eat fish I’ll go buy some. Especially anything that is slow to grow. Largemouth take from 7 to 12 years to get to 10lbs.

Keep enough for only two days. Gives me good incentive to go fishing......again!
Release and keep depending on the species.

I keep the rainbow trout because there is a great stocking program in Massachusetts. I release everything else.

to reiterate , in the 70's opening day (3rd sat in april) limit 6 in a pond 12 in the river. they figured it out. no opening day. 3 fish limit all year. But I still see Aholes take their 3, go home and come back for more. As a side note Maddog if Mike (MDF) comes up on you leaving a pond (down the cape) with more than 3 in the cooler. your toast unless your friend is right there to say they are his. He was a Maine Fish warden before coming down here. He stays out of site because he likes to catch poachers.

I only take 3, and my fishing partner doesn't eat trout, so he gives me his. We keep our fish alive on 2 separate stringers, and we will trade off smaller fish for bigger fish. We keep it legal, and we keep it fun.
