It’s a good thing my life didn’t depend on catching fish.

Hello all. I can’t catch a fish of any kind. I found time to go fishing four times this summer. Did not catch one fish, not one! Not one bite! I’m fishing in the Clark Fork river in Thompson Falls Mt. I’m trying for pike, large and small mouths bass or just anything that swims. I don’t have a boat so bank fishing is what it is. Now that it’s fall should I just wait until spring. The river here opens up to form a lake just before the dam. I’ve tried frozen smelt, all my crank bait lures , nite crawlers , some jigs but there hard to use from the shore. Is it my scent. Someone told me to try we 40, tried that to. Don’t know-what to try.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks LarryW

Hi Lar. I see you tried everything except "peas" JOLLY GREEN GIANT peas. Gar ron teed to get you more fish than you can carry home. Some people use da peas like Carp fishermen use corn Larry, on hooks. Forget da hooks my friend & try this. When you get to da river scatter the peas up & down the bank about a ft apart & then take cover behind the bushes. When the fish come up to "take a pea" you hit them on the head with your rod. (ugly stick works best) Happy Fishing

I think your right. I’ve been going where other people have told me to go. Maybe they didn’t want any competition. I’ll find my own spot. Thanks a bunch!

Maybe the timing was off. And I guess some fish are hard to catch. I know southern fish can be extra tough. They would rather eat nothing at all than eat the wrong thing

Try the down side of dam? Lots of fish wait there for a meal to speed by!

When I fish a new lake, I first do a non fishing recon.
I wait at the ramp for a couple of old guy locals show up.
Then discretely glass and watch where they go.
I will do this several times while out in the boat fishing myself.

Don't feel bad. I've been fishing almost my entire life and this year I got skunked with no fish more often than ever before. I think it has to do with all of the rain we have had early season. Last year I caught close to 250 fish. this year I've caught 3. Then last week my son and I went for bluegill in my hotspot and we never even got a bite until he dropped his bare hook in the water and a little bluegill bit it and hooked itself. lol. He caught one on an "F"ing bare hook!!!

Why don't you go with a guide the first time and you will get the layout of the water and what is working best and you can find out all kinds of things from the guide on what works best different times of the year. I have always gotten a guide the first time I have fished an unknown area. Local bait stores are also good people to talk to that will give you advice on what to use, etc. Good luck.

Lary: Please relax.....fall is a great time for your area. You need to start out asking around the shops, talk to some other fishermen around the area. You may find a hot spot near the river and lake joining. Find out if there are other areas where the two meet. Do a little home work and you will find the key to open that door.
You sound very frustrated. Be calm and approach this like the challenge it is. That is why they call it "fishing" and not "catching". Pike are finicky eaters. Once they eat they rest until the next hunting foray.
Make sure you pay attention tot he weather, water temp, fishing pressure and time of day. Bank fishing can have great results if you take your time and think it through.
I must say, your frustration came through clearly in this post.
Good luck and please have fun.

Hi L.W. I live down the river from Thompson Falls and also fish the Clark River, only on the other side of
the Cabinet Gorge Dam. There are Walleye and Cutthroat to be had, as well as SM bass. I like the cutthroat
and usually tie a RED butt on my flies. And yes I have been skunked at times, but not often.
