I think what we have here is a failure to communicate. What i see this fisherman holding up are Sand Trout, which he is calling Weakfish. Speckled trout are also Weakfish, or what we call them on the Gulf Coast. Just Sayin...RJS

It's the local name thing again Robert. Weakfush here, gray trout in NC and evidently sand trout in Texas. Go to New England and they call them squetague, or at least something like that.

The one I caught in N.C. had blues, silver, yellow shining colors. Gorgeous fish. Tasted good too!

According to a fishing encyclopedia a weakfish which lives from NC and northwards is a cynoscion regalis.
What lives from NC southwards and into the Gulf of Mexico, spotted sea trout are cynoscion nebulosus.
Weakfish or squeteague in New England are much bigger fish than their southern 'cousins'.
Two different species as I see it.

I like using jigs with atomic chicken soft bait or clouser minnows

Here in Virginia, we call Weakfish Gray Trout. We also catch Speckled Trout(Spotted Weakfish) and occaisionally Sand Trout which are more plentiful in Florida and the Gulf states.

I don't think your gray trout are the same, or if they are, they certainly get a lot bigger than in the Gulf. Just Sayin....RJS

In the Chesapeake Bay they grow quite large. The world record caught in New York waters is 19lbs A. Spotted Weakfish of 16 lbs was caught in the Chesapeake Bay. The world record Spotted Weakfish was landed in Florida and weighed over 17lbs. The gray Trout population in the Atlantic crashed in the 1990's and has not yet recovered. At this time the bag limit is one fish per day at least 12" in length

Wow! Those are big trout. I do not know what the record size speckled trout is along the Gulf Coast. Guess one could Google it. Just Sayin...RJS

To my knowledge, they grow big in the Gulf too. One of the main hazards to Specks everywhere is winter kill. When the larger ones die it affects the future spawnings.
