Surf Casting Rod

I’ve long enjoyed fishing with rods that are considerably small for surfcasting (7’) in inlets and jetties having some success. I prefer these rods as fighting smaller bluefish is still fun, but I’ve come to realize that this rod simply isn’t adequate for launching plugs and bucktails on the beach or places like montauk. Is there any surf rods with enough power to launch plugs but also have enough play to make fighting mid-small size fish fun?

Try a light/med 8’ rod.

I have a 9ft ugly stick that I love and have caught pretty big stripers, blues, etc.

For what you described I'd think that 9 feet would be my minimum consideration. Might want to consider a custom made.

My go to is either a Lamiglas GSB132 1 L or a 108. Not sure if they're still making them though. The hard part is shipping unless you get the 2 piece version. The 108 will throw from around half ounce up to maybe 5 Oz, the 132 I use for my bigger plugs, up to about 7 ounces.

I have found that if I need non shippable equipment when traveling in the U.S., a stop at the destination pawn shop will produce a rod cheaper than I could ship one for. Local people pawn locally used equipment.

St. Croix is coming out with a new line of rods called seage…supposed to be available in November….they have one that’s a 10’6” with a weight range of 1/2-2oz for throwing lighter lures…thinking about getting one when available…TD has the info on their site.
