I tried taking it apart and washing the whole unit in soap/water, but it did nothing. Any other ideas?

DID you get it apart? I’ve had trouble doing that myself. Try soaking in kerosene or mineral spirits, then lube.

In case of improper assembly, you can find Shimano owners manuals online ( I forget where ) and my reel's had an excellent exploded view of where everything goes. Or you can call around tackle shops in your locality and find one to service your reel.

In my experience, though limited, Shimano makes quality products. I suggest you take your reel to a dealer and have them assemble it. Just Sayin...RJS

In the event that you can't get it back properly, you don't have to throw it away. Send it back. They have a great reputation for replacement.
