The concept of the ladders are to reach closer to the drop offs. You carry the ladder as far as you feel comfortable. The other purpose is it gets you out of the very cold water. That said many are caught from shore with waders and without ladders

You bring your own ladder (kitchen type), and can usually park within 50 ft of the shorline. Bring your waders

My largest pyramid lake trout have been caught shore fishing without a ladder on spinning gear. So you don’t have to fish the ladders.
