Earliest photos I have available at present. I too had a great teacher. I’m on the left in the first image. Second from the left in second image. The one with the big ears. 😁😁😁

Started at 3 with Dad, I’m 68 now, so 65 years a fisherman. Thanks Dad!

Thanks for the nudge down memory lane to some of those early days!

My favorite was sitting between Dad’s legs in a one-man life raft, holding the pole while he paddled us around some remote mountain lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains. We were both pretty wet and slimy by the end of the day with 20 Brook trout in the tiny boat with us!
We had so many great days together…

From 3 days ago. HBD.

Good topic J. My father was an outboard motor mechanic. Started me out at 4 years old in 1955. Been 66 years and still going strong. This is my first rod and reel from 1955. Had it restored. Reel is a Penn Peerless No.9. Rod is a Penn with a wooden handle and rubber stopper on th end.

Beautiful rod! So neat you still have it! That is a family air loom. Hope it gets passed down one day. Be cool on the wall in a man cave. Maybe be cooler to catch some fish with.

Another post lead to talk of years of fishing experience.

Specific question is how many years of experience is there among our 10 most seasoned members?

I’m thinking 500-700 years easy! Post your years of experience and I’ll keep a tally and post our top ten at the end.

My earliest fishing on my own was around 10 years old. I am 69 now. Twenty three of those years were as a sport fishing charter boat Captain.

Getting to that - wanted to read
the other posts, first ! My grand-
father taught me the basics starting around age 7 or 8 using a handline
similar to the one in the photo !

By age 10 I was using a baitcasting reel - almost quit fishing due to the aggravation of backlashes/birds' nests trying to cast with it !
Following year (11th summer) I got my first spinning rig and starting enjoying fishing much more - started catching a few trout and some more sizeable bass - no more sunfish !

My grandfather passed in 1969, shortly after my 20th birthday -
lost interest and didn't fish much
the next 10 years ! In 1979 I started
a new job and made a new friend
who was a fishing fanatic - went
out fishing with him a few times
and started getting back into it, learning more and catching more/bigger trout and bass !
Now I was hooked !

I am now 72 and have been fishing
since about age 7, so 65 years if you still count the 10-yr. hiatus when I hardly fished at all !

Unfortunately, my best friend/fishing partner passed back in 2012 from a brain aneurysm - I miss my buddy !

Got my first birds nest at 4. I can still hear my Grandfather's voice. Jesus Christ Thomas, what in the Sam Hill have you done here! That was in 1959. Caught my first small mouth Bass that day in the Juniata river, Millerstown.

Sorry for being impatient. Well worth the wait. Enjoyed learning your fishing history. That hand line looks like like fun but a challenge!

Sorry about your friend! I had a friend in high school who’s father passed the same way. Too soon!!!
