What is spooky here is that it appears that this gater was there all along waiting for an opportunity. A bigger gator might have gone for the boy.

What is interesting is FL and the south are full of gators but very seldom anyone is eaten by them. Just like where I live we have mountain lions, bears, and rattler snakes and only once in a while someone is attacked by them. Most snake bites are good old boys messing with them. Even shark attack's are rare for as many people who go into the ocean. I think we don't taste good and as a whole animals will leave us alone if we just stay out of the way.

Next year will be viewed differently. That is why I do not intend to be on a lake in a canoe or kayak.
LOL sounds like a great idea AB. Hopefully a once in a lifetime experience. What a rush. 😂😂

From my limited prospective there are more gators in north east Florida than a few years ago. I've seen two crossing the road right down from my house this summer. I've been hear 8 years and have never seen a gator around my house before.

Yep had a few in our area of NC just last year. Not many put they were there.
Back when I was stationed at Myrtle Beach the Wilmington newspaper ran an article about a gator hanging around the USS North Carolina. This was back in '68 or so. I hope that is their northern limit.
Come fish the northern states and be done with it
That happened to me about 2 months ago. Fishing a drainage canal here, where the canal split into 2 narrow creeks when I hooked a medium sized Bowfin, as I was reeling it in, I heard a splash to my left side. Looked over and saw a 5-6 foot gator making a beeline for the fish. Now this creek was only 20 foot wide so he was on it quick, well I backed up the bank without reeling and of course I pull the fish along with me! When I got to top of bank and turned to look, the gator came right out of the water and grabbed the fish and my backpack strap with all my lures, leaders, digital scale, etc inside and turned and swam away, snapping my line. I just stood there looking as my freshwater pack with probably $150.00 of stuff inside disappeared. This canal has some nice bass in it too, caught my PB bass there, both over 8 lbs. Haven't been back because have to buy all new stuff! Didn't think I could still move as fast as I did. Took a few hours for the old ticker to slow back down to normal.

That happened to me, in a park pond on Hilton Head Island. Hooked a small bass, a couple of pounds, and as I slid it on to the bank a gator exploded out of the water and grabbed it. I must'a looked funny scrambling backwards up the bank! Hook shook loose, though, so the rod remained in my hand.

In the past (35 years ago) people feed gators on Hilton Head. They were crazy aggressive. I had one get my float caught between his teeth. The line was protected by what remained of the float so I played him for a while but kept thinking whats next. I let him sink to the bottom where he dug in and I was able to snap the line. At least he didn't come out of the water like yours. That would have scared the s**t out of me.
All I can think is that not too many fishermen are in the area making the catch for the gator. He then decided to capitalize on getting your lures with the intent of using them himself (or herself) when pickens are slow.

Posted this awhile ago, but with
all the new members since then,
it wouldn't hurt to post it again !
This is the range of the American alligator, for anyone planning to visit/fish in any of the southern
states that have them ! Florida
also has freshwater crocs, but
they reside mostly in the Everglades area - there was one incident where
a boy was snatched from a saltwater beach back in the early-80s ! Not sure if that was a 'gator or croc, though !
