I just went to my local walmart and saw powerbait bumped from like 3.96 to 5.34. The 4 packs were 9.99 and now theyre 13.44. I was like yeeesh man. Half the bottle ends up getting discarded through snags etc. Cost to drive somewhere decent to fish is like $30 in gas etc. ice/snack another $5-8
I mainly go for rainbow trout because i basically have a choice from trout/crappie/bass/catfish. I like the serenity of going fishing but also dont like things that are not cost effective. Im sure other things have gone up in price as well. Maybe im just being uptight because i have no income.

Everything has gone up. Ever since this pandemic came to be, it shut the world down. The big corporations are taking advantage of a bad situation.
The new people aren’t much help either…🐟on
Darealmvp: I do not know anything about where you are living but growing up, we never ever bought a penny's worth of any kind of bait. We dug earthworms and then finally created our own worm farm. We would seine minnows in local creeks, and finally worked out a deal with a farmer to trap perch in a small lake on his property. You could plan ahead and go to Utube and learn how to create your own worm farm. Also, you might consider minnow traps you could use where you fish. Just Sayin...RJS
For those who fish for food and who live close to saltwater fishing, why not get a cast net and either catch Mullet to eat or use for bait. Almost all ocean fish will eat mullet and many prefer it. There are several methods of fishing that produce results that do not require buying bait.
If you try to keep up with the boys who fish tournaments, you are forced to pay a 'pretty penny' for the effort. To fish for subsistence, you don't even need a rod and reel. Between cast nets, throw lines, and such, you can eat well even to the point of being sick of eating fish! Just Sayin...RJS
Fishing to supplement food source takes thought, skill and work. Fishing for entertainment takes money. It's real simple. If your fish cost more from fishing than market fish per pound, then you are fishing for fun. If you are fishing for fun, fresh fish meals are just an expensive bonus. I love fresh fish, but I would hate to thing how much it cost me per pound.
Fishing for food is about as expensive any more as hunting for food. Unless you can do both out your back door. But fishermen used to catch fish with a cane pole some type of line a hook and a worm from the garden.hunters used to be able to shoot a meal with a home made ball on top of some black powder that can be made at home, reclaim the ball and recast it. In between then and now there’s been a lot of innovation to make both pursuits easier but more expensive. You can make your own version of power bait. You can use natural baits. You can even make your own lures. You can make these sports as expensive or as economical as you want. It just takes imagination.
