Calaveras Lake in San Antonio Tx is a cooling lake for the power plant. The power plant in inbetween Calaveras Lake and Lake Braunig and it uses both lakes for cooling. Both Lakes completely man made. The redfish can survive due to the warm water, but cannot reproduce. So they have to be restocked every year.

currently the Red Drum slot is 17" to 28". You can keep one over-sized Red in TX using the detachable tag from your license. I love them blackened with a Cajun shrimp sauce (crab optional), or baked with lemon butter sauce.
Red's can live in fresh water just like Stripers and believe it or not, so can Corvina, which is basically Speckled Trout. They used to be stocked in the 90'sw not sure about now. Neither can breed in fresh water.
Calavera is a warm water power plant lake and is small. This time of year the Hybrids, Reds and Black Bass will be chasing the Tilapia into surface schooling action in front of the dam. watch for boiling water and throw rattle traps, spoons ( I like Gold) or surface plug and hang on.
Catfish will be red hot by the reeds in about 5-10 ft. I make chum and toss it to the edge of the reeds then fish with an adjustable bobber rig and chicken livers. You can get really nice blues and channels. Seems they might be there to eat the seeds from the droppings of migrating birds. Not sure, but the action can be great with 3-5 lb fish common.
Have fun and look out for the ignorance at the ramps.

I had a losing streak 4 or 5 months. Was getting depressed. But I go to the lake to relax if I catch fish it's a bonus.
