Changing The oil(s) in a car or an outboard is the cheapest - and best - thing you can do for it. It is not recommended to leave contaminants in the motor from the combustion chamber in the engine where they can have a corrosive effect. Changing the lower unit oil not only replaces used lubricant but also gives the opportunity to see if any water is present in the lower unit from a leaky seal. It doesn’t take much for mono or braid that gets wrapped around a prop to work it’s way past the oil seal at the back end of the gear case. Any water present can raise hell with your bearings.

I change out the oil and grease every year. I don’t cold storage my boat though. Stays in the driveway and once a week I start it and let it idle for a few minutes. Since I will fish in winter in north Texas. I do put stabil in to keep the gas treated and water out. I have the Merc 90. 2017. Haven’t had any issues with this yet. And it keeps my systems active.
