Channel cats. Super good eating. The wife and I have been catching a bunch as of late and my kids can’t get enough!

There is a difference between Channel Cats and Yellow Cats. I could be mistaken but believe the picture shown is that of a yellow catfish. Channel cats had distinctive black spots at random over their bodies and yellow cats do not. Also, channel cats have a distinctive hump back and yellow cats have straight backs.

I never noticed any difference in the taste provided they were not too big, like over 10 lbs., or so. Just Sayin...RJS

RJS you are definitely more of an expert than I. But there are little black spots on that fish. The channels around here range from a yellow to almost purple but they are all the same type. I think? Like I said not an expert.

Yellow cat, aka flathead.......I don't see that. Channel cat has a forked tail, yellow doesn't

We call Mud cats; yellow cats. Shorter and stubby and like Sinker says, no forked tail. I'd call that a Channel. Both are good eating.

Bullheads have a strait tail, catfish forked tail. If that fish has 4 pairs of barbels (wiskers), it's a channel catfish.

It looks like a channel catfish to me.

Ohio has a fish ohio program that started in 1976 that award anglers with pins for what they consider "throphy-sized" fish. Bullheads need to be 14" or larger to receive a fish ohio pin. Last years I targets bullhead trying to get a fish ohio size bullhead. 15+ trips later, no love caught a bunch that were 12" to 13 1/2". Just couldn't catch a 14" bullhead. Caught 6 or 7 of them when catfishing this year, still no 14" or larger bullhead.

Catching a bullhead 14" or longer in ohio is on my bucket list to get a fgish ohio pin.

When I was a kid I had pins for sheephead, walleye and yellow perch. Wonder what happened to them?πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ What other fish Ohio have you caught?

perch walleye steelhead catfish crappie bluegill large & small mouth bass

I turned a yellow perch in this year I caught in pymatuning (12 1/2").

More often then not I forget about the master angler pin. You need 4 fish ohio (different species) to get the master angler pin. I caught a 30"+ channel cat this year, a 11" bluegill & a 14" crappie along with that perch. And as usual I didn't take pictures of the other fish and send them in. More interested in cleaning the fish and putting the equipment away.
